T+A stands for Theory and Application in electro-acoustics, i.e. the harnessing of the laws of physics to provide perfect
musical reproduction. Ever since our company was founded we have been developing loudspeakers and electronic
equipment with the aim of reproducing recorded music as faithfully as possible, i.e. with the smallest possible difference
from the original sound. With this aim constantly in mind, we place absolute top priority on the quality and manufactur-
ing standard of each individual component, and consequently on the complete chain of equipment which forms a sound
system. We develop and manufacture all our products in Herford (Westphalia, Germany).
The company was founded in 1978 by Siegfried Amft after he had completed his University studies and gained
a degree in physics. From these humble beginnings the firm has developed into one of the leading German High-End
equipment manufacturers,.
The history of T+A began with the building of sophisticated transmission line loudspeakers, and has now
reached the point where the company produces a full range of Hi-Fi equipment of incomparable quality. 1982 saw the
introduction of the newly developed CRITERION series of speakers, and this proved to be a crucial step forward. The
Criterions were a range of floor-standing audiophile transmission line loudspeakers, and were the first products to give
T+A a clear edge over the competition. They were followed by a steady flow of new, innovative products which quickly
carved out a clear brand image for the firm as a leading High-Tech company.
By 1984 these products had proved to be a great success with the demanding Hi-Fi public, allowing the T+A
development team to expand, and develop even more exciting equipment; in that year the firm introduced its first
regulated active loudspeakers in the shape of the SOLITAIRE series. They were a genuine sensation, and found
immediate acceptance in the High-End community. These active loudspeakers incorporated integral amplifiers of out-
standing quality, so by now the bridge to the development of electronic equipment was already in place.
Fundamental Information and History - continue

The year 1988 saw the start of an intensive programme of development work, backed by considerable financial invest-
ment, with the aim of producing a complete series of electronic equipment, all of which would be manufactured in
Herford. This required the establishment of a powerful development department, as well as a completely new building to
house the production and administration processes. The clear aim of this programme was to develop and market a range
of electronic units which would equal the success of the companyís loudspeakers, which by this time had become very
popular. These products were aimed squarely at the High-End of the market-place; a market segment of considerable
size which at that time was not contested seriously by any German manufacturer. T+A were able to exploit this gap in the
market in a consistent and rational manner. Soon the company was able to offer a complete series of loudspeakers and
electronic equipment which was no longer aimed simply at the Hi-Fi freak; the products now also attracted purchasers
who were interested in top-class design and image. This marked the start of the companyís steady rise to become
Germanyís leading High-End audio equipment company. Today the electronic units account for around 60% of the firmís
total turnover, and sales continue to grow strongly.
In 1996, after several years of development, T+A brought to market the worldís first range of fully active, fully
digital loudspeakers, bearing the brand name Solitaire, and these speakers soon established themselves internationally
as an acknowledged milestone in the history of the loudspeaker. For the first time Hi-Fi loudspeakers could be calibrated
accurately to compensate for the characteristics of the listening room. At the same time the firm continued to develop CD
players of the very highest quality, and soon achieved a market-leading position in that field. The crowning glory of this
development is the CD 3000 R reference unit.
In 1997 T+A introduced a range of products which justified its new position as a supplier of the full range of
High-End equipment: two television sets of supreme quality, several Dolby surround decoders, complete Dolby sur-
round loudspeaker sets and a system remote control set for the entire range were introduced at the 1997 IFA. This
broadening of the companyís approach brought a widespread welcome from trading partners and end-users alike, with
the net result that turnover continued to rise, against the general trend in Germany at that time.
The start of the 1998 season saw the introduction of a new series of Criterion transmission line speakers,
beautifully built and of elegantly slim design, and these qualities combined with their extraordinary sonic capabilities
brought a flood of excellent test results and a corresponding increase in turnover. After five successful years the
company presented revised and further developed versions of the R-series amplifiers and pre-amplifiers, boasting a new
output stage technology, and this led to an unprecedented flood of superlative test results.
At the 1999 IFA the company introduced a further series of new and revised equipment, this time focusing on
a wider range of 5.1 digital surround decoders, DVD players, surround loudspeaker systems and a new 16:9 Real Flat
Screen 82 cm television, which ranks among the finest on the market. Another exciting development is the complete
cosmetic revision of the R-series units - the firmís most important and comprehensive family of electronic equipment. All
R-series units now feature a solid aluminium housing, allowing us to supply a range of truly beautiful surfaces in silver
aluminium and even chrome. New Hi-Fi and TV racks, also in aluminium, give our products an incomparable presence.
In late 2000 we introduced our new aluminium loudspeakers to the market. The TALIS series consists of
superbly elegant, slim loudspeakers which sound amazingly good as well as looking beautiful. In time for the IFA 2001
we have again made minor revisions to our existing Criterion series, and expanded it with the introduction of three new
high-end models: the TCI 1RE, TCI 2E and TCI 3R, plus a new centre speaker, the TAL XC, and a floor-standing speaker,
the TAL X2. The R series has also grown with the addition of the SR 1510 R 5.1 surround receiver, which we showed for
the first time at Frankfurt High End 2001. A further highlight at the IFA 2001 is our K 6 DVD surround receiver - a true
innovation in both technology and design.
All these technical facilities are housed in a well proportioned, three-dimensional cabinet with
tilting multi-function screen. We believe that this unit is truly beautiful - and many others share
our view.
The Criterion TAL series has been revised and expanded to embrace three new genuine high-end floor-
standing loudspeakers of peerless performance.
The cabinets are of highly sophisticated construction incorporating folded transmission lines driven by
speakers with carbon fibre cones. Extremely fast-response mid-range units ensure excellent transient
handling, and the electrostatic tweeters of the two large models TCI 1 RE and TCI 2 E produce an airy,
highly detailed sound which would be impossible from any dynamic magnetic speaker.

Criterion TAL X2 und TAL XC
Two new additions to the Criterion family
TAL X2
The TAL X2 looks just like the renowned TAL X1, with the minor difference
that it is slightly smaller. Both speakers offer very similar sound characteristics,
which is no surprise as they both feature two bass / mid-range drivers with
aluminium cones and our famed annular super-tweeter, which has earned its
reputation in our finest speakers.

In describing our brand-new CD 1240 R model we are obliged to apply the term ìuniqueî; it is scarcely credible, but
the CD 1240 R sounds even better than its distinguished predecessor, the CD 1220 R:
CD 1230 R
The sparkling new little brother to the CD 1240 R has everything that its sibling offers apart from the two-way converter, the co-
ax output and the dual-transformer mains section. It also boasts less in the way of internal shielding. This gives us the chance to
mention a few of this familyís exemplary qualities:
- two Sigma-Delta stereo converters operating in double differential mode for optimum performance in
terms of noise, overload and dynamics
- T + A reverse clock process provides 192 kHz / 24-bit resolution and eliminates jitter
- professional three-beam linear mechanism for long-term stability
