MAKING PROBLEMS
There are many natural problems which people have to face in the world, including earthquakes,
volcanoes and weather. For example, in early 2001 an earthquake in northern India killed hundreds of
people and destroyed the houses of thousands more.
But humans make these problems worse. The floods in Italy and Britain in autumn 2000 and in
eastern Hungary and the Ukraine in March 2001 were partly caused by people cutting down trees,
changing the direction of rivers and building homes in unsafe places.
Many of our worst weather problems are now caused by global warming the greenhouse
effect a result of the gases from our industries and cars. The temperature of the Earth is rising, and
this changes the weather, causing heavier rain which then causes floods. Also, he ice and snow at the
North and South Poles are melting, which makes the level of the oceans rise, and this will soon make
problems for people who live near the sea.
Governments need to take care of the countries they control and not allow people to do things
which change nature. They also need to stop polluting the environment by building more and more
factories. If they dont, they will make problems for our childrens children. We can help, too, by using
our cars less.
