IMPORTANT FINDING
All mechanical activities have to be learned. No
matter if you are fitting implants or simply
using your orthodontic tweezers perfectly,
practice is needed and ideally a teacher too. A
good teacher will always be up-to-date and
have practised accordingly. iTOP teachers
undergo at least eight days of iTOP training
before becoming instructors. They also attend a
minimum of one official iTOP Recall session
every year.
WHAT IS MORE
Experience has shown that implementing iTOP
in a dental practice not only results in
additional and more satisfied patients, but also
has a positive effect on the working ambience.
The annual recall session backs up knowledge
and skills and provides exciting input from

Jiri Sedelmayer, iTOP founder

Jiri Sedelmayer taught students at the
University of Hamburg for almost two decades
and then developed the iTOP method: aspiring
qualified dental professionals to learn what it
takes to brush ones teeth. Theory, its true, but
that is not nearly enough: it takes practice,
practice and more practice. Participants soon
realise that brushing teeth is an art that
requires gentleness and training.
Jiri Sedelmayer, why do people who brush
particularly energetically often have
bleeding gums, exposed necks of teeth and
even bad breath?
That is what is so tragic about current
prophylaxis. Too often, too vigorous, with
coarse tools and many of the critical spots still
get missed. No brush will ever find its own way
to these critical areas. No brush is traumatic by
itself. Its always up to users whether a
personal care product will lead to trauma or to
clean and healthy teeth and gums. Personal
touch-to-teach training by a specially trained
dental professional by you will help to put a
stop to too much, too often, too hard, in the
wrong place.

In contrast to almost all toothpastes, Enzycal
does not contain any sodium lauryl sulphate
(SLS). SLS is a highly active foaming agent used
primarily in household detergents, shampoo
and shower gels. In industrial applications, it is

machinery because of its aggressive properties.
SLS attacks the cells of the oral mucosa. This
leads to irritation and injuries proven to
promote painful mouth ulcers.
There is a risk of SLS entering the body through
the oral mucosa. Whether SLS is harmful to
health is still cause for discussion but has not
yet been proved. It is nevertheless surprising
that SLS is found in almost all toothpastes.

Harder than steel and good for your teeth. The mineral hydroxylapatite (HAP)
hardens the enamel, and gives teeth pearlescence.

What do Sils in the Swiss Engadine valley and the Bavarian Fichtel Mountains
have in common? Tourist attractions, certainly. Even more: these are locations
where hydroxylapatite is found a fairly rare mineral in the apatite-pyromor-
phite group classed among the anhydrous phosphates. This crystallises in the
hexagonal system with the chemical formula Ca5[OH(PO4)3].

But you dont have to travel far to get it: 70% of the dentine is comprised of
hydroxylapatite. Consisting of 95% hydroxylapatite at 5 on the Mohs scale, the
enamelum is even the hardest substance in the human body even harder than
steel.

HYDROXYLAPATITE MORE EFFECTIVE THAN FLUORIDE

Despite this property, acid can attack and break down tooth enamel. However,
laboratory tests show that hydroxylapatite hardens tooth enamel more
effectively than fluoride alone. Toothpaste containing fluoride only makes the
enamel acid-stable by exchanging the hydroxide for a fluoride ion, with the
result that fluorapatite forms on the enamel surface.

In contrast, if a toothpaste contains hydroxylapatite, regular use results in a

protective layer of artificial enamel being deposited on the teeth. Teeth glow
with pearlescence.

HAP remineralises damaged tooth enamel in this way, seals exposed dentine
channels and reduces the sensitivity of exposed tooth necks. Investigations have
shown that, unlike fluoride, hydroxylapatite also reaches deeper tooth layers
and even combats incipient caries.

The front teeth, especially the lower ones, are often very close together.
So close that not even our CPS prime 06 interdental brush can be used. In
these cases, dental floss is perfect. Our range has a large selection of
