the students to faculty guide.
Summer Project is an integral part of the 24 months full time MMS and PGDM programs of K
J Somaiya Institute of Management Studies & Research (SIMSR), Mumbai.
The period for the training is two to two and half months, tentatively during the months of April-
June of every year. No student is allowed to change the organization of training assigned to
him/ her without the prior approval of the Institute.
This manual includes guidelines, procedures and rules for the Summer Project, which is a
compulsory requirement for the award of MMS and PGDM programs at SIMSR.
The objective of the Summer Project Report is to allow students to organize and report the
learning gained during their summer placement. From the academic perspective, the Summer
Project Report should be an intelligent presentation of the students understanding and
resolution/observations of management problems. The Summer Project Report should
demonstrate the integrated understanding of the various courses in management that were
covered in the first year of MMS/PGDM programs.
The recommendations made in the Summer Project Report should as far as possible be in both
quantitative terms (costs and benefits) as well as qualitative terms. It is pertinent to note that the
Summer Project Report represents a tangible output and may stand as testimony of the
student's demonstrated potential in the managerial arena.
2. To ensure that the company / organization gets adequate benefit from the students in
terms of the resources it spends on them during the training so that there is a mutual
benefit of experience and learning.
3. To provide a platform for the company / organization to test the reliability, quality and
performance of the students so that it results in concurrent projects or preplacement
offers later if the companies / organizations so deem fit.
The topic for the Summer Project will be stipulated by the company / organization.
While the focus should be on the companys topic, the students may suggest additional topics to
be covered during their Summer Internship without affecting the quality of their report on the
topic stipulated by the company.
Supervision / Guides
During the Summer Internship the student will be under the guidance of an official in the
company / organization who will act as the Corporate Guide. The Corporate Guide will provide
guidelines on how the student should work during the stay with the company / organization. The
corporate Guide will also oversee the students progress on the Summer Project.
In addition, each student will be guided by a Faculty Guide of SIMSR. The student is required to
report to the Faculty Guide immediately after joining the company and indicate the topic and
details and proposed methodology. It is the duty of every student to keep regularly in touch with
the SIMSR Faculty Guide regarding the progress of the Summer Project.
The Faculty Guide may consult the Corporate Guide periodically to review the progress of the
Summer Internship of the student. The Faculty Guide may visit the company / organization if
located in Mumbai.
