Investigating Symmetry: Due 9/11/2017 by 8am

9/08/2017
Learning Goal: SWBAT identify line and rotational symmetry in the environment around them.
Each student will create a Google Presentation:

Slide 1: Lesson Name, Your Name, Date, Period, and Learning Goal. Put the learning goal as a footer on each page after
the title page. Create some type of theme.

Slide 2: Define symmetry, rigid motion, line of symmetry, reflectional symmetry, rotational symmetry, and angle of
rotational symmetry. Site were you get your definitions.

Slide 3: Title: Line/Reflectional Symmetry. Find a picture in nature on the internet that demonstrates line symmetry, but
does not have the lines of symmetry already drawn. You will draw a dotted green line on the picture to show all lines of
symmetry. Then state on the slide. This _________has ______________line(s) of symmetry.

Slide 4: Take 3 pictures that represent reflectional symmetry in the environment. Use the same sentence as above to
discuss each picture.

Slide 5: Reflection: Answer the questions. Write in complete sentences and restate the question.

1. What do you have to know about the segments and angles in a figure to decide whether the figure has line
symmetry?
2. What figure has an infinite number of lines of symmetry? (you may also include a picture if you would like)
3. A figure undergoes a rigid motion, such as rotation. If the figure has line symmetry, does the image of the figure
have line symmetry as well? Give an example.

Slide 6: Title: Rotational Symmetry. Find a picture in nature on the internet that demonstrates rotational symmetry, but
does not have the rotational symmetry already drawn. You will show the angle of rotation (use a protractor to measure)
with an arc and the degree labeled on the picture. Also draw in the angle of rotation. Then state on the slide. This
_________ rotated ______________degrees. The angle of rotation is______________, the object can be rotated
_______ times at the same degree.

Slide 7: Add 3 more pictures that you take with rotational symmetry, show the angle of rotation. Use the same sentence
as above to discuss about each picture.

Slide 8: Reflection: Answer the questions. Write in complete sentences and restate the question.

1. Where is the point of rotation?

2. Explain how you found the angle of rotation.
3. Do any of the figures have line symmetry as well? If so discuss.
4. Are there any polygons that have both types of symmetry? If so, Explain. You may use pictures as well.

Slide 9-12: Think of the alphabet: which letters have line symmetry, rotational symmetry, both and, none. Organize
them accordingly on different slide. Show the symmetry on each letter.

Slide 13: Answer the following questions. Using complete sentences and restate the question.

1. How are the two types of symmetry alike? How are they different?
2. Why is rigid motion important for symmetry?
3. How do you determine whether a figure has line symmetry or rotational symmetry?

If you need more slides it is fine to use more, but no less than 13.
