After completing this module, you should be able to:
Read and understand Cummins wiring diagrams
Recognize the symbols used to represent engine components in the wiring diagrams
Understand the importance and benefits of circuit tracing

Because this program requires your interaction with some graphics, you need to know how to zoom and navigate. Use the zoom
in button to enlarge the display and focus on the area of the document. Once you have zoomed in at least one level you can
move around inside the document. To move or pan the enlarged display, use the mouse. Position the cursor on the display, a
hand will apppear when this feature is enabledand click and hold the mouse button. Drag the mouse to pan with in the display
and release the mouse button when the display shows the portion of the document you want to view. At this point you may
zoom in again to see more detail. If you need to view more of the document, use the zoom out button.

To assist with diagnosis, Cummins publishes wiring diagrams for their engines.
Scene Number: 0010 1005

Periodically throughout this module you will encounter scenes that look like this. These are practice exercises to provide an
opportunity to put the information you have just learned to use and help you to understand the information just discussed.

Scene Number: 0010 1010

Even though the diagrams are engine only,
the OEM is responsible for some of the wiring shown on the diagram. The diagram is divided into two sections.
The left side of the diagram is wiring that the OEM is responsible for and
the right side of the diagram is Cummins wiring.
Scene Number: 0010 1020
Audio
Because the OEM controls the datalink, its location on the vehicle
varies by manufacturer. The Cummins wiring diagram shows the ECM pin numbers for the datalink connection to the ECM.
Scene Number: 0010 1030
Audio
All sensors on the Cummins diagram are shown as hard wired sensors
since this is an alternative that may be used depending on the OEM. An OEM wiring diagram for the vehicle can be used to
determine which items should be multiplexed.

The wiring diagram is color coded. All DC voltages are
indicated in red, input signals to the ECM are blue, ECM outputs are purple and ground wires are black. The datalinks are
indicated with green.

When published, identification numbers on wires help trace wiring through the diagram. The circuit function is labeled on the
wiring diagram.

Scene Number: 0010 1060

Audio
Connectors are typically shown as a box that contains terminal identifiers for each circuit. A pictorial representation of some
connectors is also included on the diagram to help locate terminal positions.

Scene Number: 0010 1070

Audio
ECM connector designations may include a letter such as A, B, or C and the function of the connector such as sensor, actuator,
Scene Number: 0010 1080
Audio
Bulkhead connectors show the main connector to the OEM. You must refer to the OEM information for its terminal content
for troubleshooting purposes.

Scene Number: 0010 1090

Audio
Switches are always shown on wiring diagrams in their de-energized position. This "normal" position of the switch can be either
open or closed depending on the switch function.

Scene Number: 0010 1100

Audio
Like the switches themselves, symbols for switches vary in size, shape, and form. The switch symbol reflects the type of switch
and the number of circuits to which it is connected.

Scene Number: 0010 1110

Audio
Electromagnetic relay symbols generally include a representation of a coiled wire indicating the control circuit of the relay and
how it is connected to power and ground. The diagram shows how the other relay terminals are connected to other components.
The relays are always shown in the "de-energized" position. That means that the contacts are shown as they are when no power
is applied to the electromagnetic coil.

Scene Number: 0010 1120

Audio
The battery is indicated by a rectangle with a plus and minus symbol to indicate the battery terminal connections.
Scene Number: 0010 1130
Audio
The lamp symbol will often include the color of the lamp and/or a label indicating its function.

The key switch may not be the only source of supply to the Electronic Control Module. Supplies from the key switch and
battery are labeled to indicate the power source.

Scene Number: 0010 1150

Audio
The keyswitch symbol is simplified to a circle and the various terminal connections. The wiring diagram shows the various
terminals that are connected to each circuit.

Scene Number: 0010 1160

Audio
The battery supplies one side of the key switch at the battery terminal. With the switch in the OFF position, there is no circuit
to any other terminal. With the switch in the ACCESSORY position, there is power to the circuits connected to the accessory
terminal. With the switch in the IGNITION position, there is power to the circuits connected to the ACCESSORY terminal.
With the switch in the START position, there is power to the circuit to start the engine and power to the ignition terminals.

Scene Number: 0010 1170

Audio
Electrical interference can hinder communication over the various circuits in the control system. For this reason, some circuits
are protected through the use of a shield surrounding the wiring. This shield is indicated by an oval around the wires. The shield is
grounded on one end to reduce the electrical interference.

Scene Number: 0010 1180

Audio
Ring connectors provide the ability to connect wiring to devices with threaded terminal posts. These ring terminals are indicated
on the wiring diagram by the pictorial symbol shown here.

Scene Number: 0010 1190

Audio
The tachometer is indicated by the symbol shown here. The tachometer receives a signal from the ECM to indicate the engine
Scene Number: 0010 1200
Audio
This symbol indicates a fan clutch. The fan clutch is controlled by the ECM to operate an engine cooling fan.
Scene Number: 0010 1210
Audio
Depending on the particular engine control system other devices may also appear on the wiring diagram. For example, this
diagram shows a cab thermostat for the ICON system.

Scene Number: 0010 1220

Audio
Circuit tracing is the mechanism for determining the circuitry involved with a particular function of the electrical system. Signal
tracing helps to determine:
Where measurements may be made in the system to isolate the problem?
What common points are shared with other systems?
What possible devices may be at fault?
What possible situation led to the fault which could suggest changes?

To accomplish a circuit trace:
Identify all signals and power sources associated with the function under investigation.

Scene Number: 0010 1240

Audio
Identify the source of one signal or power flow. For example, this keyswitch has power supplied to it directly from the battery.
Scene Number: 0010 1250
Audio
Follow the route of the signal through the wiring and devices as far as possible. For our example we might need to trace the
accessory circuit from the keyswitch through the 5 amp fuse and to the lamps installed in the vehicle dash.

Identify connection points or test points found in the trace and expected electrical values. For example the 5 amp rating of the

sensors and actuators shown on the diagram. In some cases, even the installation torque is listed for convenience.

J1587 PIDs (Parameter identifiers), SIDs (Subsystem Identifiers) and FMI (Fault Mode Indicator) information along with J1939
SPN (Suspect Parameter Number) and FMI information is also listed.

Fuse symbols are relatively standard on most wiring diagrams. Most diagrams include the fuse number or breaker rating next to
the protection device.
