CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

College is a stressful time for students especially 4th nursing students. They need to manage

their time between families, social, academics and RLE. Oftentimes, they spend ample amount of

time on their academics because they need to be at school for seven days. As a fourth year student,

they have a subject Course Audit which reviews the topics from level I to level IV. The hardship

of having a great amount of school works and a seven days schedule leaves the students a little

time to rest and a high level of stress.

This stress can be compounded as college students are vulnerable to stress carryover, a

condition where stress experienced in one area of their life, whether at home, in a class, at work,

or with a roommate, can increase the stress in other areas (Pederson, 2012). The stress of college

students has major implications on learning and performance.

Stress has a detrimental effect not only on the physio-psycho-social health of an individual

but as well-being as a whole. In addition, stress could trigger alcoholism, eating disorder, sleep

disorder, absenteeism and psychological disorder. It will not only affect their school performance

but other aspects of life as well. This study is about exploring the effectiveness of pet therapy in

helping the 4th year nursing students relieve or reduce their stress level.
Statement of the Problem

The main purpose of the study is to identify the effectiveness of pet therapy on stress levels

among 4th year nursing students at Arellano University.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the level of effectiveness of pet therapy as perceived by the respondents?

2. What are the different stressors encountered by 4th year nursing students at Arellano

University with regards to their academic and clinical duties?

3. Is there any significance relationship between pet therapy and stress level of 4th year

nursing students?

Significance of the Study

This study on effectiveness of pet therapy on stress will be able to help the school

counsellors and students. School counsellors usually helps out the students to manage

their problems and voice out their stressors. They will be able to recommend pet

therapy to relieve or reduce their stress. In addition, if students are aware about pet

therapy they will be able to try it and improve their coping skills on stress.
