HOMEWORK PROBLEMS

Week 11: Due Friday, 17 March 2017

1. The grain of the wooden block in Figure 1 is inclined at 75 to the horizontal. If the block
is loaded by the stresses shown, find the tensile stress perpendicular to the grain, and the shear
stress parallel to the grain.

4. An element of a material experiences stresses: zz = 20 MPa; xx = 40 MPa; xz = 40 MPa;

yy = 80 MPa. The shear stresses on planes perpendicular to the y-axis are zero. Calculate the
three principal stresses and the maximum shear stress.
(Ans: 80, 60, -40, 60 MPa)

5. Calculate the three principal stresses and the maximum shear stress for the top surface of the
L-shaped cylindrical solid beam shown in Figure 2. L is 100 mm, the diameter of the cylinder
is 10.0 mm, and F is 100 N.

6. A thin-walled tube is fabricated from flat plate by wrapping the plate into a helix and welding
along the seams, which make an angle with the axis of the tube, as shown in Figure 6. The
outside diameter of the tube is 60 mm and the wall thickness is 2 mm. If = 60 , find the
normal and shear stress components transmitted across the weld line when the tube transmits a
torque T = 1 kN m in the direction shown.
(Ans: 85, -49 MPa)

7. Figure 7 shows a solid cylindrical shaft of diameter 10 mm and length 1.0 m, which is
built into a wall at one end A. At the other end B, a load of 10 kN is applied at the top and
perpendicular to the wall. Also, equal and opposite loads of 5.0 kN are applied parallel to the
wall at the top and bottom as shown. Find the three principal stresses and the maximum shear
stress in the beam.

8. A cylindrical pressure vessel has a radius of 100 mm and a wall thickness of 2.0 mm. There
is an internal pressure of 1.0 MPa. A torque of 2.0 kN.m is applied to the pressure vessel.

9. Figure4 shows a beam ABC of length 1.0 m and solid circular cross-section of diameter 30
mm, that is pinned at C and simply supported at A. The beam supports a concentrated lateral
load of 1.0 kN at B and a torque of 500 Nm applied at A and resisted by the pin support at C.
Determine all the principal stresses, and calculate the maximum shear stress in the beam.
(Ans: 0, -65, 136, 101 MPa)

10*. A disk sander is shown in Figure 10. The most severe loading condition occurs when the
sanding disk is pressed against an object near the outer radius with a sufficient force almost to
stall the motor. The coefficient of friction between the disk and the object is of 0.60, and the
motor stalls at a torque of 20 Nm. Calculate the three principal stresses and the maximum shear
stress in the 16 mm diameter section of the shaft. (Neglect any stress concentrations induced by
the changes in diameter.)
(Ans: 0, -95, 6.6, 51 MPa)

All dimensions are in mm.
