CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Industry

Bamboo is a precious gift of nature to human because of its excellent growth rate and

remarkable properties. It is one of the most sought after materials, especially in tropical countries.

Bamboo resembles some of the characteristics of wood although it is not durable. It also

deteriorates after several years of use, putting heavy pressure on the resources, owning to increase

demands for frequent replacement.

According to its origin, bamboo is known to the entire world has been around and used for

centuries. Records dating back more than seven thousand years talk about products made of

bamboo such as arrows, paper, building materials, and books. Because of its origins, the current

way it is used, and the economic sustainability of the plant, bamboo is an excellent resource.

The word bamboo comes from the Kannada term bambu, which was introduced to English

through Indonesian and Malay. Bamboos have long been considered the most primitive grasses,

mostly because of the presence of bracteate, indeterminate inflorescences, "pseudospikelets", and

flowers with three lodicules, six stamens, and three stigmata. Following more recent molecular

phylogenetic research, many tribes and genera of grasses formerly included in the Bambusoideae

are now classified in other subfamilies, e.g. the Anomochlooideae, the Puelioideae, and the

Ehrhartoideae. The subfamily in its current sense belongs to the BOP clade of grasses, where it is

sister to the Pooideae (bluegrasses and relatives).

The bamboos contains three clades classified as tribes, and these strongly correspond with

geographic divisions representing the New World herbaceous species (Olyreae), tropical woody

bamboos (Bambuseae), and temperate woody bamboos (Arundinarieae). The woody bamboos do

not form a monophyletic group; instead, the tropical woody and herbaceous bamboos are sister to

the temperate woody bamboos. Together, more than 1,400 species are placed in 115 genera.

Most bamboo are native to warm and moist tropical and warm temperate climates.

However, many species are found in diverse climates, from hot tropical regions to cool

mountainous regions and highland cloud forests. In the Asia-Pacific region, they occur across East

Asia, from 50N latitude in Sakhalin south to Northern Australia, and west to India and the

Himalayas. China, Japan, Korea, India, and Australia, all have several endemic populations. They

also occur in small numbers in sub-Saharan Africa, confined to tropical areas, from southern

Senegal in the north to southern Mozambique and Madagascar in the south. In the Americas,

bamboo has a native range from 47 S in southern Argentina and the beech forests of central Chile,

through the South American tropical rainforests, to the Andes in Ecuador near 14,000 feet.

Bamboo is also native through Central America and Mexico, northward into the Southeastern

United States, Canada and continental Europe is not known to have any native species of bamboo.

Recently, some attempts have been made to grow bamboo on a commercial basis in the Great

Lakes region of east-central Africa, especially in Rwanda. In the United States, several companies

are growing, harvesting, and distributing species such as Phyllostachysnigra (Henon) and

Phyllostachysedulis (Moso).

The species of bamboo that we know today evolved from prehistoric grasses between thirty

and forty million years ago, long after the extinction of the dinosaurs. It then became the major
food source for herbivorous animals, eventually becoming a food source for the modern human

being as well.

Bamboogrows everywhere in the world except those places with extremely cold climates,

it is thought to have originated in China, where the first use of bamboo to make every day items

was recorded. This tall, hearty grass was used for as many products as they could manage, as it

was a quickly renewable resource.

Bamboo, in fact, is one of the most widely used products in the Philippines youll see it

everywhere. The Filipinos believe that humans were created when a giant bamboo split in half;

and the people give bamboo a lot of importance- and rightly so; its one of the most useful plants

around. Besides being used for mundane purposes like construction material, fishing traps, fishing

rods and blinds, bamboo is also used to make some lovely handicrafts- ashtrays, vases,

lampshades, hats, baskets, and musical instruments.

. Bamboo was used frequently in the eastern hemisphere for housing for centuries, it is now

only becoming popular in the western part of the world. More and more architects are seeing the

beauty and intelligence in using bamboo for structures and other building material, and are

becoming famous from the use of it in buildings.

Bamboo has been used through history not only because of the strength of the material, but

also through the renewable prospects. Through history, wood has become more and scarcer, simply

because to produce a full-grown tree can take up to sixty years, and then another sixty years time

for a replacement. Species of bamboo equal to the height and width of a tree take as little as sixty

days to mature completely.Bamboo is also easy to grow because of the root systems.Bamboo is

also difficult to get rid of, unless it is completely plowed under.

The unknown building material and resource of the future, bamboo has had a long and

rich history. It will be used for years to come in everything from housing to bed sheets, and even

more as more information is learned about this amazing plant.

The Philippines is rich in bamboo and bamboo products. Bamboos grow abundantly.

Bamboos are used for building materials as sources of food and as a versatile raw product

especially in south Asia, south East Asia, and East Asia.

In the Philippines, bamboo has diverse, functional and traditional uses. It underlies so much

of Philippine culture that it is part of many ceremonies, traditions and beliefs. Philippine culture is

also replete with myths and tales about bamboo. For example, the first Filipino man ("lalaki") and

woman (babae") came from a piece of bamboo according to a in the past, bamboo production area

would only refer to bamboos naturally growing in the forest and in "natural stands" in private

lands.

Some bamboo shoots are edible and are used in many Asian dishes and broths. These are

available in sliced from both fresh and canned version. The shoots of some species need to be

soiled before they can be eaten because of their toxic content.Bamboo is used for treating

infections. It is a good source of protein and potassium. In countries like china and India, bamboo

was used to hold up simple suspension bridges.Bamboo is used in making furniture and used to

make music instrument.Furniture made from bamboo includes sala set, dining tables, and corner

and center tables, cabinets, beds, lounging chairs, sofa beds and rocking chairs.

It is also used for handicrafts which are nontraditional products made of indigenous raw

materials like bamboo. Processed foods such as bamboo shoots are either pickled or diced and are

being exported to more than twenty countries including Philippines. Construction materials for
low cost house among Filipinos especially those living in a countryside and the bamboo pole used

as decorations during the 2012 Flora Filipino Expo in Manila.

Bamboo craft are useful and beautiful. Generally, bamboo product are classified as primary

(poles, shoots, and stumps) secondary or semi-processed (sawali, splits, sticks, boards) and

finished products (handicraft, furniture, and ready-to-cook eat shoots. The primary and secondary

product is inputs for various industries including housing, fishing, agriculture, and manufacture

However, today, bamboo plantations have become dependable sources of raw materials for

some segments of the bamboo industry.Visayan myth.Majority of the countrys regions are

engaged in bamboo handicraft production. Because bamboo is readily available, it is crafted into

various household items/commercial articles for both local and foreign markets. Common items

include trays, lampshades, fancy baskets, brooches, napkin rings, penholder, jewelry boxes, flower

vases.

Handicraft products like baskets, brooms, feather dusters, bamboo sofa set, cabinets, and

other furniture. Accessories like earrings, bracelets, necklaces, and other clothing apparel which

young people today are fond of wearing are also made from native products like beads, shells,

seeds, and others. This is a clear indication that our handicraft industry is enjoying the patronage

of Filipinos nationwide.

Handicraft is a type of craft where people make things using only their hands or

basic tools. The items are usually decorative and have a particular use. Usually the term refers

to traditional methods of making things.

The items often have cultural or religious value. Things made by mass

production or machines are not handicraft goods. Also, handicraft things are different from "arts
and crafts" because they are meant to be used for something. Handicraft items are generally

contrasted with mass production, things made on a factory production line. Philippines is blessed

with rich natural resources that are scattered throughout its 7,107 islands. These God-given natural

wonders are the sources of people's food, shelter, and other basic needs. After some time, people

acquired many skills that enabled them to tinker with nature. They used the raw materials from

trees, plants, and other natural resources that are very abundant and turned them into simple, yet

useful tools or instruments.

Sur between a saloon and a tailoring shop. It will serve as the showroom for the finished products.
Chapter II

Market Research and Analysis

Today, many Filipinos are engaged in handicraft businesses. Handicraft-making has

become a means of livelihood for them, especially now that many handicraft owners are exporting

their products to Japan, United States, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, and other

countries around the world.

According to the Forest Products and Research Institute, The Global trade of bamboo

products averaged $1.49 B (2007-2010).The International market value for commercial bamboo

is expected to hit $17B by 2015 and 45% of the total market will be accounted for by emerging

products. Philippines intends to maintain its rank as the world's 6thLargest exporter of bamboo and

rattan products. In 2010, the Philippine bamboo industry was formalize by virtue of Executive

Order 879 that created the Philippine Bamboo Industry Development Council (PBIDC) Directs

the use of bamboo for at least twenty five (25%) percent of the desk and other furniture

requirements of public elementary and secondary schools. Pole production and processing are the

two major components of the bamboo industry. There are 70 known species of bamboo in the

Philippines of which 53 are erect and 17 are climbing. Only nine are economically important which

include kawayan tinik (Bambusa blumeana), bayog (B. merrilliana), kawayan killing (B. vulgaris)

giant bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper), bolo (Gigantochloa

levis), kayali (G. atter), buho (Schizostachyum lumampao), and anos (S. lima). In 2011, US$

424,872 (PhP17.4 M) worth of bamboo handicrafts were exported to Brunei Darussalam, Italy,

Japan, South Korea, Poland, Turkey, United Arab emirates and United States of America. These

included baskets and basket ware containers, purses, handbags and wallets.
Philippines is bless with rich natural resources that are scattered throughout its 7,107

islands. These God-given natural wonders are the sources of people's food, shelter, and other basic

needs. After some time, people acquired many skills that enabled them to tinker with nature. They

used the raw materials from trees, plants, and other natural resources that are very abundant and

turned them into simple, yet useful tools or instrument.

The Philippines is the second largest world producer of handicrafts, mainly baskets out of

indigenous materials. This industry continues to provide a respectable contribution to foreign

exchange earning of the country (US$71.9M in 2000) while many handicraft items are also sold

on the local market. Altogether, the sector is providing livelihood to more than 1 million Filipinos.

Although the industry has experienced some setbacks over the last ten years, it has kept the respect

of the high-end markets in the United States, European Union, and Japan and has only lost a great

part of the low-end market to China, our main competitor.

Bamboo products are distributed to both domestic and export markets. The domestic

market is segmented for furniture and handicraft. The high-quality products are directed to high-

end markets (i.e., hotels, restaurants, condominiums, and residential houses) while low- quality

ones are sold to low-and-medium income consumers.

In terms of local market, the furniture and handicraft industries topped the local

user/market of bamboo product in the country accounting for about 40% of the total production.

Next to this, in terms of total volume of consumption, the fish pen and the housing and construction

sectors pegged at about 25% while the vegetable (crates) and fruit (props and crates) industries

accounted for about 10%.Registered bamboo firms are located mostly in Metro Manila,
Pangasinan, Cebu, Iloilo, and Bacolod. Enterprising individuals or groups are now also in Rizal,

Laguna, Batangas, Cagayan, Isabela, Quirino, and other provinces.

Despite this, Filipino craftsmen have indigenously overcome scarcity and increasing prices

of raw materials by constantly producing new designs for their products. Over the years, Philippine

handicrafts have evolved through innovative changes in designs reinforced by exciting choices

and combination of indigenous materials. There is, however still ample room for improvement,

particularly in remote upland communities with little access to market information, brokering

services, capital, and technologies for value addition. Is enjoying the patronage of Filipinos

nationwide.

Almost every family in the Philippines owns one or more handicraft products like baskets,

brooms, feather dusters, bamboo sofa set, cabinets, and other furniture. Accessories like earrings,

bracelets, necklaces, and other clothing apparel which young people today are fond of wearing are

also made from native products like beads, shells, seeds, and others. This is a clear indication that

Marketing objectives and goals

Generally, the proponents sought to assess the viability of putting up a handicraft business

in Ilocos Sur.

Specifically,the objective aims to:

1. Establish an innovative kind of business idea.

2. To put into practice the knowledge acquired in starting a business.

3. To expand the business not only in the locality but globally

4. To provide more opportunities of employment.

5. To maximize the use of bamboo in the locality.

6. To create a name in the handicraft industry.

7. To create a market share in the industry.

Marketing Strategies

The target market are the tourists, mostly local tourist, individuals and firms. And

if there is a probability, the proponents wanted to expose their products in different part of the

country and also internationally.

Product Offering

The product is made of bamboo which is well known to all. It will provide the

customers products which are very unique and original ones. It has original idea and concepts from

it which you never seen before. It could also be a customized product if the customer wishes too.

It aims to create effective quality control in manufacturing bamboo handicraft and to attain quality

of the products. Also to outsource the best quality of raw materials for the product.
Price Offering

The partners will be using the cost based pricing wherein the cost of the production

as a baseline to inform pricing decision. This strategy will ensure that it will cover the production

expense and that there will be a mark up to be count so that there will be no lose at all. It aims to

implement pricing strategy within the market range.

Promotion

To be able to promote the products, personal selling will be used to directly

communicate with the potential customers. It will also use advertising through television such as

TVigan, radio such as CoreFm and BomboRadyo and also through the use of internet to be able to

make products as well as the business known to the people.

There is also a sales promotion which will be put in exhibits and when there is a

trade shows to be able to demonstrate the latest product line to potential customers. It will be a

great to have direct purchases with the potential customers and also to promote the product to

everyone.

The word of mouth will also be used to encourage people to attract customers. This

aims to build good and strong relationship with the supplier and the customer.

Place

The business needs a manufacturing place which will be located at Nagbettedan,

Sto. Domingo, Ilocos Sur in the extension of the house where one of the partners resides. The
showroom for the finished products will be located at 2nd floor, Public Market, Sto. Domingo,

Ilocos Sur near a salon and a tailoring shop.

There is a plan to join in trade shows to better expose the products since our

location is not very accessible to potential customers but there will be no worry because there are

certain ways to make the products become accessible and reachable to the customers. This aims

expand the business and to establish a name in the industry.

There is no need to recruit sales agents because the partners/ owners will serve as the

sales agents at their own to better market the products since they have the sufficient knowledge

about the business so it is better to let them do the carrying of the marketing strategy to be used.
