Design a heat exchanger to sub-cool condensate from a methanol condenser from 95 C to 40 C.

The flow
temperature rise fro 25 to 40 C. (1 Shell and 2 tube pass )

1 Coolant is corrosive so assign to tube side


2 Specific heat of Methanol= 2.84kj/kg C
3 Find Heat duty= (100,000*2.84(95-40))/3600= 4340 KW
4 Heat capacity of water= 4.2 Kj/kg C
5 Find water flow= 4340/4.2(40-25)=68.9 kg/sec
6 Calculate log mean temp difference=(95-40)-(40-25)/(ln(95-40)/(40-25)=31 C
7 As a initial trail using one shell pass and two tube passes
8 Find value of R and S and then find the correction factor Ft
9 Calculate corrected log mean temp difference= 26 C
11 From figure assume value of U= 600 W/m2C
12 Find the provisional area by using= Q=U*A*Tlmtd=278 m2
13 Choose 20mm O.d, 16mm ID, 4.88m long tube, cupro nickel
14 L=4.83 Meter
15 Area of One tube= 4.83 *20 *10-3*pie=0.303m2
16 Number of tube=Provisional area/Area of one tube=918
17 Selet pitch, in thi case we will select 1.25 trianular pitch
18 Find bundle diameter=826mm
19 Using bundle diameter find clearance
20 Calculate reynolds number, prandtl number and conductivity
21 Find tube side and shell side heat transfer coefficient
22 Find overall heat transfer coeffiient
23 Calcualte the presurre drop

Shell diameter=Bundle diameter + clearence=894mm

Area directly proportional to baffle spacing


Increase baffle spacing area increase
Linear velocity is inverselry proportional to area
