Problems of the Month: Grades 7 9

= Question 1
=

Carly, Nick, and Jimmy are all avid fans of the online computer game Clash of Clams, where

+

the goal is to conquer the entire seafloor. The game tracks how many hours each player has

spent logged into the game. When the three of them are playing at Carlys house one day,
Nick notices that the range of their three play times, the mean of their play times, and the

+
median of their play times are (in that order) three consecutive integers.

=
Nick has been playing for the least amount of time of the group, at 40

=
hours. Jimmy has played the second longest, and Carly has logged the
most hours.

+

What are Jimmys and Carlys play times?

= Question 2

=

At Inas school, there are 3 floors, which are all identical. On each floor, there are 92 lockers

+

along each side of the hallway. The lockers are numbered starting at locker 001 on the first

floor. The locker numbers increase from 001 to 092 along one side of the hallway, then they
continue on the opposite side of the hallway from 093 to 184, where locker 093 lies directly

+
across the hall from locker 092. On the second floor, the numbering continues, where
locker 185 is directly above locker 001. And likewise on the third floor.

=
Ina notices the following about her friends lockers: Aris locker is directly above Brynas

=
locker, which is 17 lockers to the left of Carries locker, which is across the hallway from

+
Deshawns locker, which is directly above Ekas locker, which is 12 lockers to the right of

Farrahs locker, which is across the hall from Gregs locker, which is directly below

Heathers locker, which is 34 to the right of Inas locker.

+
(Note that when Ina says, to the right, or to the left, those directions are given from her

viewpoint, looking at the lockers from the hallway.)

=
Finally, Ina notices that Aris locker and her locker have the same three digits. (And
repeated digits must appear the same number of times, so lockers 122 and 212 have the

+

same three digits, but lockers 122 and 112 dont.)

What locker number does Ina have?
