DESCRIPTION

Based on the 10 % of the biodiesel demand by 2020, 11,400 kg of rice bran oil (composed of 80 % triglyceride
and 20 % free fatty acid) will be fed into the fluidized bed reactor per hour, producing biodiesel amounting to
11,323.94 kg/h at 98 % conversion. The methanol will be added at a molar ratio of 6:1 (methanol to oil), with a
catalyst (TPA/HZ) loading of 3 %w/w.

ASSUMPTION(S)/BASIS
1. Three moles of free fatty acid are equal to one mole of triglyceride. [1]
2. Rice bran oil is predominantly composed of oleic acid (free fatty acid) and triolein [2,3]
(triglyceride).
3. The process is operating at steady state. [4]
4. Rice bran is composed of 15 % oil. [5]

RESULTS AND CONCLUSION

Processing an amount of 11,400 kg/h rice bran oil via (trans)esterification, biodiesel and glycerol are produced
amounting to 11,323.94 kg/h and 1,172.37 kg/h, respectively. Since only 98 % of triglyceride is converted to
biodiesel, unreacted triglyceride (230.05 kg/h) exits the reactor together with the excess methanol (1,273.62 kg/h).
