Design And Implementation Of an Power Supply for LED
using 230V AC

Abstract I have design and implement an isolated switched mode power supply for LED lighting application. The yback
converter is used for AC to DC conversion as well as DC to DC conversion providing galvanic isolation between input and
output. Mostly, y-back converter can be derived from buck-boost converter, in which inductor split to form a transformer. The
transformer with specified turns ratio steps up or down the input voltage with isolation. The energy transfer from primary to
secondary is controlled using a switch connected to primary. The duty ratio of the switch decides the output level, which can be
controlled using an isolated secondary feedback. In this project, a y-back circuit is designed to obtain a pure DC voltage of 5V,
5A from 230V, 50Hz AC mains. The output current can be regulated to drive a 16W LED load.

y-back converter is getting more popular because of
simplicity in design, low cost and high efficiency. These When the switch is open (fg 2.b), the stored

that is obtained by rectifying AC mains followed by a
capacitor filter. The commonly used topology includes a
controllable switch like MOSFET that operates under the
frequency in the range of 100 kHz. For better energy
efficiency and less voltage stress, two-switch topology can
be employed but it increases the cost and complexity of
the circuit continuous variation as a function of local
operating points. Therefore in this project I have discussed
single-switch topology of y-back power supply

The functional block diagram of power supply is
represented in the Figure 3. 230V, 50Hz mains is rectified
to 320V dc using a bridge rectifier. Surge protection is
necessary as there is a possibility of voltage spikes in the
input side. The protection circuit is followed by the
rectification. The rectifier output is filtered for getting
smoothened dc voltage. Next stage is y-back converter
which is a dc-dc converter circuit. The transformer is used
for electrical isolation between input and output. One needs
to improve the voltage regulation by adding a linear
regulator stage or by giving a direct output voltage
feedback to the control circuit.
