Experiment : FILTRATION: Plate and Frame Filter Press

Objectives of the Experiment
1. Determine the specific cake resistance and filter medium resistance in the filtration of aqueous CaCO 3
slurries with different concentrations performed at constant-pressure condition.

Methodological Framework
Objective: Determine the specific cake resistance and filter medium resistance in the filtration of aqueous
CaCO3 slurries with different concentrations performed at constant-pressure condition.

Constant: Filtration of CaCO3 in Actual output:

Pressure plate and frame filter Filtration time (s)
Filter medium area press Mass of filtrate (g)
Variable: Desired output:
Concentration of CaCO3 Volume of filtrate (m3)
in the slurry (10%wt. and 14%wt.)

Take the slope and the

= +
y-intercept of the plot 2
and plug in to the
t/V (s/m3)
equations to solve for
and Rm.
