Introduction

A tea stall is a common place everywhere in towns and villages in our country. A tea stall is like a mini
parliament. It is a small shop where ready tea is served to the customers. It is usually located at a railway
station, bus or in front of schools, colleges and universities. Besides, it is found at a market, near a factory
or at a harbor. A tea stall is always crowed and noisy. I have visited a few tea stalls to get information for
making the report. While visiting the tea stalls, I have gathered a lot of experiences. Some of the owners
of the tea stalls were very friendly and some were rude to me. They told me that they havent enough
time to talk with me. The information that I have found during visiting the stalls are given below.

Objectives

The objective of this report are as follows.

To find out how and why they got into this business.
What is their daily income is.
How their business can be improved.

About the Owner

The first tea stall I visited was of Md. Abdul Mannan Pintu. He was very busy with his shop nevertheless
he was happy to provide me with information regarding my study. He is in his mid-thirties. He was born
in Laksmipur in a struggling family. But even with all the struggling he went to school and completed SSC.
But due to his familys financial condition he couldnt study further. Instead he started looking for jobs.
First, he started working as a day laborer but he couldnt make ends meet. So, for making his family lead
a stable life he went abroad. But before going there his parents wanted him to get married so, he married
a girl from the same village. They had 3 daughters and a son together, he made sure all his children could
go to school. He stayed abroad for several years. After returning he invested in a tea stall in Gazipur. He
came here with his family in 2016 and started doing business.

About the stall

Md. Pintuss shop is very well established. You cant tell that it is a tea shop at first glance. He put in a lot
of money to get his business going. He started with seventy thousand takas. The shop was made out of
tin underneath the tin on the roof there was a wooden board to reduce heating. The shop had three bench
and a few stools for the customers to sit on. It the shop also had a television for the customers to watch
sports and other things. The shop was inside a market like place, there was loads of other tea stalls in that
area. There was a fan providing cool air to the stall-keeper. There was a trunk where the money was being
kept, a large drum filled with fresh water, the was also a filter full of water but you would need to pay a
bit of money to drink from there. A self was sitting in front of the keeper that housed a lot of cigarettes
packets. He had two stove to boil water for making tea. He started his business on January 26th, 2016.

3
Daily Activities

He opens his stall at 7 am. Before that the bakers delivers the product such as breads, cakes, laddus etc.
On the way to the stall he buys bananas and kerosene oil for the stall. The water suppliers deliver three
gallons of water with in 8 am. He starts by putting all the delivered goods to their rightful place. In the
meantime, some customers are already in the waiting to buy cigarettes and day laborer eats their
breakfast which consists of buns with tea and after that they light a cigarette for desert. Before its lunch
time a lot had happened by then some customers comes to have tea with their cigarette and some starts
to talk about stuffs like politics, sports, the countrys financial state and foreign affairs like an expert. As if
they could solve the matter in hand within a very short amount of time. Then at 1 pm its time for him to
close the stall and start for home for lunch and on the way, he picks up two of his daughter from school.
After he finishes his lunch time duties its time for him to open his stall again. By the time, he opens again
its already 2:30 and some regular customers are already waiting for him to open the stall. In evening,
some teenagers show up at his stall who are here to pass the time gossiping and sipping on tea. After
office hours, the office going people stops here to drink tea and smoke their last cigarette of the day.

Products

He sells a lot of things at his store. Obviously, he sells teas as it is a tea stall. He also sells cigarettes, breads,
cakes, drinking water, beverages, chips, biscuit, eggs etc.

Daily Financial Activates

On his first he sold seventeen hundred takas worth of goods out of that his profit was six hundred takas.
Daily he sells around twenty-five hundred takas worth of goods. Out of this his average net profits stays
at approximately seven hundred takas. He keeps a daily record for all the transaction he makes. When I
asked about payables he said he is not interested in doing business like this.

4
Grievances

When I asked about the problems he faces at first, he said there werent a lot to talk about. But when he
started to elaborate I could tell there were a lot of problems he faces regularly. Like extortion from the
people who are to sworn to protect him in this case its the police and shoplifting sometimes.

Advice

He can increase his profit by getting more supplies for which he will need to get a loan. But normal banks
and the loan sharks are not viable options so, he will need to look elsewhere. Many NGOs and grameen
bank are giving loans to these small-time business owners. He will need to put in an extra few hours in.
As he said he closes his shop at 10 pm. There are a lot of customers after 10 pm he will need to make
these people his daily customer.

Enterprise-2

About the owner

The second one I went to was owned by Md. Dulal Hossen. He was around his mid-twenties living with his
parents. He had a family of six that included his parents, two sisters, two brothers including him. He was
born in Shariatpur he came to Dhaka in December 2016 looking for work. He didnt study at any institution
whatsoever. Before opening the stall, he used to work as a day laborer in his village. In Dhaka, he lived
with his uncle, his uncle is the one that helped him start the business. Within just a year he brought his
entire family to Dhaka to live with him.

About the stall

His stall a bit mundane. He started the business with twenty thousand takas. His shop is made out of wood
for support he used bamboos. His shop had 2 benches for the customers to sit on. There is a huge drum
filled with water. There wasnt any trunk for keeping the money. He kept them under a rug he sat on. He
had a stove for making teas there was a bucket to put the dirty waters in.

Daily Activities

Md. Dulal is an early bird so he opens his shop at 6:30. When he starts opening his shop the bakeries
deliver their products. The water supplier delivers water. Many of office going people stops at his shop to
get cigarettes. The day labors come to get their usual breakfast of bread and tea. Even some school or
college going kids stop at his stall to drink tea and smoke a cigarette. The day goes on like this he doesnt
close his shop during lunch time because he brings his lunch with him. The day goes on like this. People
come and go they talk about many things. Some even start arguing if others dont share their viewpoints.
He has a few regular customers they come by every day. At night things starts to hectic. As the office gong
people comes back they stop at his stall and they start gossiping with their colleagues with no end. Md.
Dulal closes his shop at around 12 am.

6
Products

He sells tea, cinerites at his store. He also keeps biscuit, chips, cake, Drinking water, breads. For some
reason he sells detergents powder, shampoos a few medicines etc. He is already thinking about increasing
his inventory.

Daily Financial Activities

The first day he started doing business he sold goods worth of five hundred takas and the profit was very
little. The sell was this low because he opened his shop for only half a day. Now he sells goods worth of
two thousand takas at least. Out of this is profit is around five hundred.

Grievances

He said that many of the local gangsters hassle him for money. He went to the police for help. But they
didnt pay any attention to him. Some people buys cigarettes and walks away without paying when Dulal
isnt noticing.

Advice

I will recommend that he seeks help from the local police if they cant help, then he should go to the
person who is in charge of that area. He can get more profit by adding more product to his inventory.

About the owner

The last shop I went to was of Idrish Ahmed. He was an old man. I was a bit astonished to see him working.
He was born in Narayan Ganj he came to Dhaka many years back. He doesnt have any formal education.
He doesnt even remember when he came here. He manages the stall with his wife. His wife works from
dawn to lunch time he comes after that and works till night time. When I went there he was managing
the stall. He was busy with work but was happy to help me. His family consist of seven members. He has
a son, his daughter in-law and three grandchildren. Idrish Ahmed married of his three daughters. They
come to visit once in a while.

About the stall

The stall is very old. Its made out of wood. Its also broken in several places. There is a plastic over the
roof because during rain the roof starts to leek water. This stall had 4 benches. Though his stall was old
but he had a lot of space. He had two Drums full of water, two buckets, two stoves, A huge trunk to put
the money inside the trunk also had cigarettes packets placed on top of it. He doesnt remember how
much capital he had when he started doing business but it was around two thousand or less.

Daily Activities

The shop is opened by his wife at 6 am. When she starts to get the shop in order the daily supply comes
she then puts everything in their place. In the meantime, she sells cigarettes to the customers. Many office
going people stop at the stall and school going kids also stop to buy things. The day goes on and at 2 pm
her husband comes to take charge of the stall. Following this strategy, they dont have to close their shop
even for a single moment during the day. He works in the stall from then on to 11 pm. During this time,
all sorts of people comes to his shop.

Product

At the stall people can buy cigarettes, different kinds of tea, biscuit, breads, chips, cakes, laddus many
types of candies etc.

8
Daily Financial Activities

Daily they sell goods worth of three thousand takas out of this their profit is around seven hundred takas.

Grievances

When asked he said he doesnt face any problems. The local cops or the gangster does come to hassle
him for money like the last two stalls I visited. He knows almost all of the customer so they dont make
any kind of problems for him.

Advice

His stall is very well maintained so I am at loss as to what I should recommend but I will say this he can
increase his business by getting another stall which I am sure he can afford. The people in that area all
comes to his shop so, if he gets another the people will be happy to come.
