As per Wikipedia and a general order-of-magnitude estimate, the Young’s modulus

of rubber is about 1 MPa and steel about 200 GPa.

Since this is a simple uniaxial tensile case, we can say that the stress component along
the direction of extension is related to the strain component along that direction
through Young’s modulus as

σ11 = Eϵ 11

Substituting the above values in these equations, the stress observed in steel is about

will depend on the material properties irrespective of whether it is linear or nonlinear Edits
FEM. That is the universal truth that is because of physics (or mechanics)!

Only difference to the above, in Nonlinear FEM is that the stresses will have a more
complicated relation, than written above, to the strains. In addition, the relations
might be history dependent (like plasticity) or implicit (like hypoplasticity) or written
through free-energy density (like hyperelasticity).

Overall, in any problem, you have three relations:

Kinematics & Compatibility: This relates the displacements and strains

Equilibrium: This relates the forces and stresses

Constitutive: This relates the stresses and strains

Also note that in FEM, you are primarily solving for displacements and nodal reaction
forces. Stresses & strains are obtained as a post-processing output. It would be beyond
the scope of this post to elaborate on this.

Case 1: If it is linear static analysis you are carrying out, your stress values doesn’t
depend on young’s modulus and poisson’s ratio. However the displacement varies.
Most FEA engineers while starting their careers do not know this(Including me and
some of my friends). They fail to answer the same question in interviews. Most people
say steel will have lesser stress than aluminium for same component which is
wrong. So just take an example and try to solve the problem and find out yourself.

Case 2: If it is non-linear analysis, the stress values depend on the material properties
applied

Very much.
Behavior of materials are characterized based on the material property definition.
The material characterization curve should be obtained and fitted based on
experiments and the type of experiments used to identify the parameters of material
characterization is of high detail.
