Woman charged
with fraud

A 42-year-old woman from Wheatland
County has been charged with over
300 fraud-related charges, after numer-
ous citizens fell victim to the fraud that
launched an investigation by the Strath-
more RCMP.
Jane Elizabeth Moore befriended in-
dividuals, convincing them she was a
member of a well-known wealthy Cal-
gary family with an inheritance of $38
million. By falsifying bank documents
and a court order that stated she would
be receiving millions of dollars, she was

exclusively at

money, assuring them the repayment
once the inheritance was available.
Moore was arrested on an outstand-
ing warrant on Aug. 28, charged with
317 offences. These included 250 Crimi-
nal Code offences: two charges of ut-
tering threats; two charges of uttering
a forged document; two fraud charges
over $5,000, and 242 charges of fraud
under $5,000.
A day later, Moore was further charged
with 67 additional fraud charges of sim-
ilar occurrence.
The Wheatland County resident had
previously been known to police and
used myriad aliases such as Jane Sea-
man, Elizabeth Seaman, Jane Norman,

Once the company assessed the site
further, it was discovered that corro-
sion occurred at various sections of the
structure and the ventilation is insuffi-
cient. The roof of the lift station needs
to be removed in order to pull the
pump an estimated cost of $50,000.
Therefore, the Ranch lift station was
deemed unsafe for staff, and preventa-
tive maintenance considered out of the
question.
Council members, with the absence
of Mayor Michael Ell and Councillor
Brad Walls, were forced to consider the
consequences if the budget remained
unchanged.
According to Strathmores infrastruc-
ture and development services, not
adjusting the budget would result in
serious sanitary complications. In the
event the lift station was to fail, sewer
would probably seep out of the man-
holes where the lift station is located
and cause a blockage to the highway
where it would discharge out of the
sewer down below. If failure occurred,
there would be a discharge to the envi-
ronment that would have to be report-
ed to Alberta Environment, and tempo-
rary measures would need to be put
in place such as an emergency bypass
system.
Council is doing this to protect the
environment and to protect the level of
service that the community expects to
have, said Mark Ruault, director of in-
frastructure and developmental servic-
es for the Town of Strathmore.
We were hoping for better prices.
Mechanical systems are always tough
to estimate and its dependent on avail-
ability of mechanical contractors. It was
a tough decision for council, but it was
necessary, in my mind.
The request for tender only received
two valid submissions, thus limiting op-
tions.

Strathmore embraces Alberta Culture Days

With Alberta Culture Days celebrating their 10-
year anniversary, and overshadowed by the Cana-
da 150th celebrations, the demand for grant fund-
ing for this years community-driven event soared.
Wheatland Society of Arts (WSA) and Wheat-
land and District Historical Society (WDHS) were
unable to secure the $10,000 handout from the
collaborative initiative to cater to a three-day com-
memorative event. But WSA is taking matters into
its own hands to ensure the community has a cel-
ebration.
Before its dissolution, the Strathmore Regional
Arts Collective (SRAC) organized three different
festivals to celebrate Alberta Culture Days an
event that received contributions from several lo-
cal organizations, including the Wheatland Society
of Arts. This year, WSA is bringing the event back
from its hiatus to promote Strathmores downtown
core, to bring out residents and to utilize the prov-
ince-wide affair as a platform to unveil the com-
pleted community mosaic mural.
When we had the arts council it definitely in-
creased year over year, said Brandy Hebbes, pres-
ident of the Wheatland Society of Arts and former
chair of SRAC.
The arts council has been gone for two festi-
vals now, so people arent looking for it anymore.
We had a way bigger event planned in the event
that we actually got the full $10,000, but we didnt
get any so we shrunk it down quite a bit. We still
wanted to do something just to get people used to
looking for something on that culture day week-
end.
The mural is a collection of 180 pieces standing
four feet high and 20 feet long. Throughout the
year, the project received input at Strathmore festi-
vals and gatherings, such as Canada Day and dur-
ing all four days of the Strathmore Stampede and
Heritage Days. Idyllically in harmony with Alberta
Culture Days, the mural tiles depict the culture in
Strathmore and its surrounding areas.
The WSA has been in existence in Strathmore
since 1986. Following financial struggles and space
restraints, the society received newfound strength
with monetary backing from the town a $75,000
grant earlier this year and the addition of a stu-
dio space located in downtown Strathmore.
In hopes of raising awareness to the business
community within the downtown core, the society

that was constructed as an ar-
mory in 1953. As the staff had to
deal with lack of adequate space,
plumbing and heating issues, a
leaking and crumbling ceiling,
and forced to unpack and oper-
ate IT equipment in the hallways
for years, the organization man-
aged to stow away $2.5 million
in their capital reserves to be ap-
plied to a new facility.
After a two-year feasibility
study conducted by BRZ Part-
nership Architecture Inc., three
options were presented: build
an addition to the current facil-
ity resulting in further parking
limitations with a price-tag of 7.4
million attached; move into an
existing facility that would need
to be completely renovated and
is near the Petro Canada gas sta-
tion, for a total of $8.3 million;
or build a new facility designed
to meet specific needs with good
access for $7.7 million the most
attractive option.

During the summer, the Mari-
gold Library System and WID
met three times with their Joint
Facility Review Committee over
July and August to determine
whether a joint venture would
suit each others needs. Having
similar sized staff and needs the
option to build a new facility on

School Division, seems ideal.
We are very much alike in a
lot of ways, Toombs said. Could

that is a possibility. Consider-

nicipality that is willing to loan

sire to stay here. We believe that
Strathmore gains a lot because

tions from other municipalities

municipalities see that Strath-
more has an economic advantage
to having Marigold here.
Toombs was referring to grow-
ing employment, possibilities of
holding more board meetings
locally, becoming more involved
in the community and possibly
offering meeting rooms for the
community, and possibly becom-
ing an example by using an inno-
vative and energy saving build-
ing design.
Councillor Denise Peterson,
who represents the town on the
Marigold Library Systems board,
proposed the motion to draft the
letter of intent.
Having sat on Marigold I un-
derstand what a strong financial
position they are in and they
are able to make the repayment
through their operations, said
Peterson. So being able to insti-
tute something like this, is at this
point, is no risk to the town and
indeed reaps much benefit. Im
just really grateful that this op-
portunity is in our community.
When asked whether Strath-
more was financially able to take
on a loan of possibly $3 million,
the towns Chief administrative
officer James Thackray assured
councillors that despite recent
accumulated debt, council would
have the ability to borrow the
funds. Furthermore, he stated
that it would be within the bor-
rowing limit as the town is still
under 50 per cent.
Marigold received a capital in-
frastructure grant of $3,02 mil-
lion this year to cover the costs
of replacing the headquarters.
However, Toombs is feeling the
time crunch as the agreement
comes with conditions on how
and when the money is spent a
deadline of Dec. 31, 2020.
Moving forward, Marigold
plans to apply for grant fund-
ing from the Community Family
Enhancement Program, the Com-
munity Initiatives Program, and
the Calgary Foundation. The li-
brary system plans to sell its cur-
rent facility and is meeting with
MLAs and MPs for information
on other incentives.
With the absence of Councillor
Brad Walls and Mayor Michael
Ell, council voted unanimously
to revisit the issue at the next
council meeting and have admin-
istration draft a letter of intent
with loan details and repayment
options for the Sept. 20 meeting.

Changes coming to Strathmore waste management

The approval of the first stage of a new Waste
Management Plan provides a dynamic approach
to focus on condensing the towns waste manage-
ment into one long-term contract, introduces an
automated curb-side collection program, and cul-
tivates a new corporate consciousness with an
anticipated additional cost of $5 per household.
During the regular town council meeting on
Sept. 6, administration introduced the first stage
of the Waste Management Plan, including an au-
tomated curb-side solid waste and organics cart
collection system; black for waste and green for
compost.
The intent of the plan is to create the frame-
work for improvements to the towns current
waste management system, and support councils
mission statement to deliver municipal services
that promote the wellbeing of the community and
to build on good long term planning for infra-
structure.
The plan was constructed to address the needs
of the community regarding mixed recycling,
organics and diversion from landfills, and solid
waste.
Within the plan are policies and programs in re-
gards to recycling, waste reduction, reuse, recov-
ery, and residual disposal that are cost effective,
financially and environmentally sustainable, and
socially acceptable.
Yet the proposal of the first stage left some
councillors slightly deflated and requesting more
information and detail.
Its very broad at this stage, thats next two and
three stages, and I really need input from council
on where thats going to go, said Mark Ruault,
director of infrastructure and developmental ser-
vices for the Town of Strathmore.
This is the broad strokes, the goalpost were
trying to aim for, and were going to zig and zag
to try and get in there and I need the definition
from council to help get there.
The current solid waste management plan ex-
pires at the end of the year, and the intention of

Fighting crime
To the Editor
On Strathmores Facebook groups, there is a great
deal of concern about crime. The concern is well
placed: According to Albertas 2013 Cost Review of
Alberta Municipal Police (CRAMP), Strathmore has
a crime severity index of 103. Thats about three
per cent higher than average for Canada, and almost
double that of High River, which stands at 55. In to-
tal, Strathmores Mounties have 88 crimes per officer,
compared to High Rivers 46. These are 2013 numbers
before the recent downturn, and before current con-
cerns. Regardless of the reason, the increased concern
needs to be addressed. But what do we do? And how
can we afford it?
The first thing we can do is enhance our partner-
ship with the local RCMP detachment. We pay our
Mounties by contract with the federal government.
Its a good deal for us that we cant match with a lo-
cal force: the federal government pays 30 per cent of
the cost, and can take care of training and discipline.
Unfortunately, that means our Mounties have to take
their marching orders from Ottawa. We can beef up
our relationship by establishing a police committee,
which the Police Act gives the legal right to oversee
the agreement, and work with the detachment com-
mander to set out priorities. It may be worth enhanc-
ing their auxiliary program the Citizens on Patrol

terson was expecting discussions on the change
in corporate culture, the triple bottom line, social
responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
One of the things that we discussed in the pro-
cess of developing a strategy (was) ultimately
about corporate consciousness and I guess I sort
of see it here in the values that you outlined, but
I dont see it as a statement in of itself, Peterson
said.
We talked about becoming a different culture,
a different kind of corporate culture, and thats a
big part of it. Councillor Sobol has talked about
it for years and Id just like to see it articulated.
Currently the town has a weekly manual curb-
side solid waste collection service maxed out at
three units per residential unit, services are pro-
vided by a private contractor Huxted Waste Dis-
posal a take-it-or-leave-it program situated at the
recycling facility, a heavy item garbage program
for pick up five times a year, mixed use recycling,
and the opportunity to use a private curb-side
mixed recycling.
Since the recycle yard is privately owned how
do we tie it in? Its a bit complex, and we love it,
everybody in town loves it, theres no question
about that, theyre doing a great job an its just
as well as our local Victim Services Society. These
are things that make heavy use of volunteers which
stretch our tax dollars a lot farther.
We also need more Mounties, but CRAMP states
they cost us over $120k each. We cant afford to just
hire more as a town, but I think there is room to ap-
proach the provincial government for more funding.
The provincial government gives us about $300,000
under a complicated formula, plus another $100,000
under a 2008 police officer program, all equal to
what High River receives. The formula hasnt changed
in a while costs have gone up, but the provincial
share of policing has not. The provincial share of our
policing has dropped from over 25 per cent to less
than 20 per cent over the past six years alone. We can
inquire about regional policing arrangements, which
are currently rare in Alberta. We can also ask the prov-
ince for a larger share of the pie and work with
other towns to increase the size of that pie.
One way or another, we do need a higher police
presence, and we cant afford to just buy it. That
means a stronger relationship with our Mounties, en-
hancing their volunteer support, asking the province
for more money and maybe getting a little creative.

RSA students run amazing race

Rosebud School of the Arts first-year
students had fun exploring their new
school and community, Sept. 6, while
running Rosebuds Amazing Race.
(The Amazing Race) gives the stu-
dents something (to do) to get to
know each other over a ridiculous
experience where memories can be
made and a little friendly competition
pulls everyone together, said fourth-
year student Bethany Wickens, event
coordinator and student advisor. It
helps break the ice between the new
students and (returning) students.
The race began with a game that
grouped students into teams, with
students from each year of classes on
each team. They received pirate names
and were dressed as pirates.
We had a lot of scarves tied around
our heads, said first-year student Amy
Pohl, who moved to Rosebud after
completing a Bachelor of Science de-
gree at the University of Lethbridge. A
couple of us had vests and stripes, and
one of the other (first-year) students in
my group, he brought his arm inside
his sleeve and tied it off he walked
around as a one-arm.
Her pirate name, she said, was Old
Nautical Salty.
Pohls team started on the upper
floor of the Haskayne-Kenney Mercan-
tile, where they were blindfolded and
then made a pirates hook from tinfoil
and a paper cup.
Their next stop was the Rosebud
Hotel, which houses Rosebud School
of the Arts offices and the Resource
Centre. They learned to use the Re-
source Centre by solving a Playfair Ci-
pher, which refers to the page number,
line number and word number from a
play. Solving the cipher also gave them
the clue for their next station.
At the BMO Studio Stage, they mem-
orized a line from Lewis Carrolls poem
The Walrus and the Carpenter.
In the green space beside the Opera
House they played checkers.
They tackled a pirate-themed obsta-
cle course.
And at the Mercantile, new stu-
dents directed blindfolded upper-year
students to walk through the dining
rooms, and the upper-year student
tried to identify the room according
to the new students description (that
information will help Pohl and other
new students when they serve dinner
theatre patrons this year).

It (the race) helped me identify the
places (in Rosebud), Pohl said. I def-
initely feel more confident about the
place now, and it was a great way to
meet people as well.
Though Rosebud is small, theres
still so many buildings and places, be-
cause the town is a campus.

Three-and-a-half years ago, Steve
Schouten envisioned more for his
employees. With the creation of Remuda
Building Ltd., he shaped a place where his
dedicated and visionary long-term staff
could build a career and find their place
in growing a challenging, pioneering and
innovative business one that just moved
its head office closer to Strathmore and
Wheatland County.
Located along the highway just west of
Strathmore, the start-to-finish construction
company utilizes the post-frame method

Changes to service agreement leaves town council uneasy

Lack of information surrounding the
inevitable final amendments to a 20-year
service agreement caused uncertainty
among council members unwilling to
sign a blank cheque, postponing the is-
sue until the Committee of the Whole
meeting that took place on Wednesday,
and raised the topic of water ownership.
The Town of Strathmore entered into
a 20-year service agreement with Epcor
Water Services Inc. and the no June 21,
2000.
As the contract is set to conclude at
the end of next June, administration rec-
ommended council to approve signing
the amended and restated agreement
with Epcor a renegotiation that occurs
roughly every five years.
Yet with no provided information on

the chambers after the Oct. 16 election
introduces a new council.
Echoing Councillor Sobols concerns,
fellow Councillor Steve Grajczyk request-
ed administration to also provide infor-
mation in comparison to other munici-
palities.
When we signed this horrendous $8.2
million plus contract for water and sewer
I always felt, what do I have to compare
it to? I dont know if its good, bad, or
ugly, said Councillor Steve Grajczyk.
I had nowhere to compare it to, and I
dont think thats fair to us or the tax-
payer. Maybe Im asking the impossible,
I dont know, but it doesnt seem right.
In response, the towns Chief Admin-
istrative Officer James Thackray said the
challenge facing the municipalities now-

REVS racks up registrations

The annual Registration Education
Volunteer Services (REVS) event took
place Sept. 7 with their largest turnout
yet.
Citizens of the town and Wheatland
County flooded the Strathmore Civic
Centre to learn and sign up for groups
around the community.
The bi-annual event featured groups
for the fall and winter season as 48
booths were open for business.
This was our biggest one to date,
said Cheryl Graff, Strathmore Civic
Centre supervisor. Its a chance for
families to one-stop-shop and sign their
kids up for a number of different orga-
nizations.
With new and returning groups on
display for registration, the Civic Centre
housed tables for sports groups, arts,
music, educational and outdoor activity
groups.
I was shocked at how many groups
wanted to be a part of this, said Graff.
As of this morning, we still had a
handful of groups trying to get in at
the last minute.
The Gleichen Gunners Pond Hockey
group was one of 13 sports-related
groups on display at the REVS event
and they received a healthy number of
registrations.
We love the REVS event. Its a great
way for exposure in the community
and for parents to ask questions about
the programs, talk to other parents and
programs, and find out what each pro-
gram is all about, said Shannon Zie-
man.
For people who missed out on the
REVS event, registration for the Gun-
ners and several other groups is still
open and can be done online or by
contacting the group directly.
I love the REVS event, said Strath-
more Silver Sharks Swim Club (SSSSC)
head coach Jen Mertz. We depend on it
in this economic time. Its an easy way
for families to learn about programs
and sign their kids up in activities.

Gaining international experience

Bolinger travelled across the Pacif-
ic Ocean to put his strength to the
test against some of the strongest
Asians in the world, in a rapidly
growing sport.
The sport is mas-wrestling. A
sport popularized in Russia, it in-
volves pinning one man directly
against another in an ancient form
of tug-of-war.
The contestants sit down on
a mat, separated by a plank on
which they place their feet. They
then grab onto a stick one con-
testant on the inside and one on
the outside and pull with all
their might. The objective is to rip
the stick out of your opponents
hands, or knock him off balance.
Matches max out at two minutes
in length, but typically only last 10
seconds. Matches are completed
in a best-of-three format.
Bolinger was invited by for-
mer World Strongman champion,
the Norwegian Odd Haugen, as a
way to promote the sport in North
America.
The three-day event took place
in Vladivostok, Russia, located in
the most southeastern corner of
the vast country, just beside China.
Bolinger took off on the solo
journey Sept. 3 and returned Sept.
8.
He, along with the other com-
petitors in the 90-kilogram and
open weighted category, were part
of the entertainment for the third
annual Eastern Economic Forum
and the Japan-Russia Summit.
In attendance, watching a num-
ber of the strongest men from
around the world flex their mus-
cles in competition, were some of
the biggest heavyweights in the
political and economic world.
Russian leader Vladimir Putin
was rumoured to make an ap-
pearance, but bailed last minute.
Bolinger was, however, still intro-
duced to some of the higher ups
in the Russian government.
The presidents of Japan and
Mongolia were also in attendance,
as the athletes competed outdoors,
on mats, on the sandy beaches of
Golden Horn Bay.
Bolinger started off strong,
sweeping a pair of matches against
Japan and New Zealand (2-0). On
the second day of competition,
Bolinger ran into a pair of ring-
ers, and lost in the third set twice
to Russia and Mongolia (1-2). The
pair of losses knocked him out of
medal contention.
I was absolutely exhausted af-
ter the first day. I am still sore a
few days after the event. It was a
taxing endeavour, said Bolinger.
The local product certainly held
his own, entering an international
competition with next-to-no expe-
rience. Bolinger only competed in
a pair of tournaments before head-
ing over to Russia.
During the Calgary Stampede,
mas-wrestling was one of the
strongman events featured at his
Strongman Expo, as he helped
introduce locals to the growing
sport.
There was definitely a lot more
to the sport than I thought and
more technique than I thought.
Those athletes were a lot stronger
than they look, said Bolinger. I
think my strength was my big-
gest advantage and played in my
favour.
It was a new experience, to say
the least.
The area of competition was
heavily guarded and people need-
ed several levels of clearance to
access the site. In the Bay, battle
ships and jet fighters were putting
on a display.
It was great to see all the differ-
ent displays of culture and sport,
said Bolinger. There was tons
of music going on and the food
from Eastern Russia was delicious.
There was no expense wasted for
this event.
Bolinger, who started his own
strongman gym in Calgary three
years ago, believes that mas-wres-
tling will take off.
In the past, there have been
world championship events in
Dubai and Hungary. It is also ru-
moured that the International
Mas-Wrestling Federation is lob-
bying to get the sport in the 2020
Japan Summer Olympics, 1,062-ki-
lometres from where Bolinger was
last week.
Later, once Bolinger works out
the kinks in his sore body, he
might think about entering more
mas-wrestling events. He has al-
ready been invited to the World
Championships in Moscow this
year, but will probably hold out
for one year.
I need to learn more about
the sport before I compete at
that high of a level again, said
Bolinger.
Back for their second season of Alberta 6 Man foot-
ball, the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks broke
camp Aug. 31 as they prepare for another season.
We have had a pretty good camp so far, said
Hawks head coach Michael Annicchiarico. We have
14 guys out with the team, which is about where we
were at last year. The big difference is that we have a
year of experience under our belts and some Grade
12s on our roster.
During their inaugural season, the Hawks finished
3-5, reaching the B playoffs, where they were ousted
from the post-season by the Assumption School Cru-
saders.
The Hawks are rolling back seven starters from
last season, including star running back Jayden Hen-
dricks and quarterback Tanner Hollingsworth.
Im excited for what the season holds, said Grade
11 student Hollingsworth. We are hoping to do
better with all the chemistry already in place from
having so many guys come back. I feel like I have
improved my passing since last year. I have more
confidence and I have done a better job reading the
field so far.
The Hawks opened the season at home Sept. 14
against the J.C Charyk Hawks of Hanna.
Last season, J.C. Charyk thumped HCC 77-13 on
the road in Hanna.
The new season brings new optimism and new
players.
Ryan Orford watched HCC from the sidelines last
year and was impressed by what he saw.
I grew up playing flag football and needed a sport
to bridge the gap between baseball and hockey sea-
son. I watched the home opener last year and they
looked pretty good to me, said Orford, who will line
up as a running back and wide receiver in the HCC
offence.
Annicchiarico, who is reunited with last years
coaching staff of Josh Jalbert and Ben Chin, is hoping
the new faces will grasp the concepts of his schemes
before opening kickoff.
The first week was basically going over the fun-
damentals while working on some drills, said An-
nicchiarico. This week, we began to work on the
Xs and Os on both sides of the ball. We are seeing
progression each day and that is all that matters.

Family Centre ready for puck drop

There was finally a cool,
refreshing feeling inside
the Strathmore Family Cen-
tre.
A free, open skate Sept.
10 marked the grand open-
ing of the new ice plant in-
side the arena.
For at least a month now,
hockey teams have been
displaced outside of Strath-
more as the finishing touch-
es were put on the project
peratures while they watch
their favourite teams play.
It isnt just a hockey sur-
face. The rink is home to
ringette teams and figure
skating programs through-
out the busy winter season.
Johnston is just happy
she wont have to travel
elsewhere for ice time this
season.
My son Landyn is in
Timbits hockey for the first
time, said Johnston. Last
year we had to travel out
to Indus for ice time. It will
ed extra grant programs
for aging buildings that
needed infrastructure up-
grades. That is when the
town jumped on this idea
for the arena upgrade and
was granted approval last
January. It is one of several
plans and renovations tak-
ing place this year as part
of the Canada 150 Projects.

The proverbial nose contin-
ues to slowly be pushed into the
grindstone for the Wheatland
Warriors bantam team.
The long, drawn out pre-sea-
son continues, as the Warriors
held their first practice Sept. 7 at
the Chestermere Regional Com-
munity Association Arena.
The Warriors started a week
early this year and most bantam
AAA programs started a week
later. The Warriors coaching staff
is still waiting for players to be
released from AAA camps, which
made their final cuts Sept. 10.
With all this extra time on their
hands, the Warriors held an ex-
tra Red versus White intrasquad
game Sept. 5 at the Chestermere
rink, one in which Team White
won 3-0.
We thought it was a great
chance to take another good
look at the players we have in
camp, said Warriors assistant
coach Brandon Neufeld, who
is entering his second season
behind the bench. We have 12
forwards, eight defencemen and
three goalies in camp right now.
We will see who we get back
from other camps.
Even though there is the pos-
sibility of some of last years
players returning to Strathmore,
Neufeld mentioned that their re-
turn to camp wont signal an au-
tomatic return to the roster, and
that he and the other coaches
need to see each player at least
twice on the ice before making

Chiefs.
The Chiefs have been dormant
while the Braves and Warriors
both try to find the right puzzle
pieces for their roster.
The Chiefs preseason sched-
ule began Sept. 10, the first of
three days of practices.
Meanwhile, the peewee Braves
continue to work through their
exhibition season. They partici-

I think we look pretty good
going into this year, said Braves

have a few talented kids coming
up and it should be a fun year

The Braves picked up a pair of
wins Sept. 9 over both Okotoks
squads, 8-4 over Green and 8-5
over Black. On Sept. 10, they
dropped their final pre-season
game 5-4 to the Foothills Bisons
at the Oilfields Regional Arena.
Now it starts for real for the
Braves, as they practiced for
the first time as a team Sept.
11. The regular season is right
around the corner, as the season
kicks off Oct. 1 when the Braves
travel to the Kinex Arena to take
on the Red Deer Parkland Trans-
mission. The Braves first home
game is slated for Nov. 3 at Hus-
sar Arena.

Senior Badgers blank Bisons

Sometimes, its nice to get a laughable
win.
The Strathmore Community Football
Association senior Badgers pounded the
Sundre Bisons 62-0 Sept. 9 at Crowther
Memorial Junior High School (CMJHS)
field.
For the Badgers, it was nice to be on
the other side of a lopsided victory, fol-
lowing their Week 1 loss in Innisfail.
It was a little bit of a cooler day than it
was in Innisfail, so maybe our guys had a
lot more in the tank, said Badgers head
coach Sean Seafoot. We also had guys
get a lot more reps in practice this week
and it showed by how we were able to
spread the ball around.
Its not like the Badgers had to work
for too many of their points against the
Bisons. The Badgers picked up four
touchdowns off turnovers, not needing
to send their offensive unit onto the field.
Brandon Middlemiss ran a pick-six
55 yards untouched to the house and
Austin Drummond had himself a scoop-
and-score, as he picked up a fumble and
scampered 28 yards to the end zone.
Despite fumbling the ball three times
in the opening quarter, the Bisons only
trailed 6-0.
The Sundre squad would turn the ball
over three more times before half, all
leading to Badger scores.
Malikia Henry took a handoff follow-
ing a Bison fumble on their own six-yard
line and lambasted a Bison defender on
his way to the house.
Later, the Bisons managed to get the
punt off cleanly, as Luke Henry fielded
the kick on two bounces, before bolting
up the right side line for the score.

end of the third quarter, just for good
measure, Henry hauled in a 41-yard
touchdown reception with 0.6 seconds
left on the clock, to put the Badgers up
comfortably 38-0.

lina Palardy, rumbled her way to a pair

There is still a lot of stuff we need
to improve on from this game, said Sea-
foot. I lost count after we hit 200 yards
in penalties. You cant do that against a
team like Innisfail, or you dont stand a
chance.
The Badgers will enjoy a bye week this
week, before heading up to Sundre for a
rematch with the Bisons.

first game of the year, but man, we have
a lot of work to do, said Badgers Head
Coach Doug Thiessen.
The Badgers defence was stifling, not
giving an inch. It wasnt just one player
disrupting the Bears in the backfield:
Thiessen rolled through a series of differ-
ent d-linemen, all plunging through the
Bears offensive line.
That aggressiveness burnt the Badgers,
as one costly penalty allowed the Bears
to reach the end zone, which irked their
head coach.

Spartans nearly knocked off
one of the top teams in the
Rangeland Football Conference
in Week 1, but melted in the
fourth quarter.
This time, against another

It was great to see this team
bounce back and have this
type of success, said Kopp. I
know they worked real hard
all week and wanted to get this
win. In a short season, being
1-1 is much different than be-

The Spartans will take a
break from their league sched-
ule to take on Rundle College
in Calgary Sept. 15. The next
Spartans home game wont
come until Oct. 6, when they
host the Brooks Composite
High School Buffalos.
