Week 8 Task 1: Geodatabase, Topology and Digitalising

1.0 Create Geodatabase

1) Catalog (yellow box near toolbox) connect folder week8task1
2) RC Folder(week8task1) New Personal Geodatabase (ddgitlayers)
3) RC Personal Geodatabase (ddgitlayers) New Feature Dataset (Lab 3 creations)
Projective coordinate system UTM NAD1983 NAD1983UTMZone15N
(This is to create a coordinate system for the geodatabase)
4) LC then RC Feature Dataset (Lab 3 creations) New
Feature class (PondsGbs);
Type of feature: Point feature
Finish
(At Field name: can import data to know more about the pond, eg. name of the pond,
depth, water clarity, etc.)
5) LC then RC Feature Dataset (Lab 3 creations) New
Feature class (Roads);
Type of feature: Line feature
Finish
6) LC then RC Feature Dataset (Lab 3 creations) New
Feature class (Field);
Type of feature: Polygon feature
Finish
7) Add data (yellow + sign below selection) Add lab3 image data
8) Double checking
LC then RC Layers (at table of contents on the left) Properties Coordinate System
Check on the coordinate system for each layer, ensure all the same.

2.0 Topology
1) Add data DC Geodatabase (Example_topology.mdb) DC Test Data hold shift, select
all except testdata_topology Add
(Can also be done by finding it at Catalog then drag it one by one to Table of Contents)
2) Add data testdata_topology No
(Set rules which will determine the error)
3) LC RC testdata_topology Properties Selection/Rules
(can check the rules set)

3.0 Digitalising

3.1 Set Scale to Digitize

1. Add data lab3_image.img
2. LC lab3_image.img Zoom to Raster Resolution
(to find the best resolution to examine the picture, then only decide which scale to zoom)
3.1 Digitize Points
1. Add data lab3_image.img
2. Add data hold shift, select Boat_Dock.shp, Houses.shp, Island_in_River.shp, and
Field,Pond,road(created earlier in 1.0) .
3. Before proceeding, ensure the coordinate system is the same for all layers
(check whether there is warning in Table of Content)
4. Ensure editor is On.
Customize Toolbars Editor, Advanced edit, snapping Allocate it properly for
convenience
5. Editor Start edit Ponds
6. At Create features (on your left or right side), select ponds
Zoom in standard scale: 1:4000 Find the ponds and click on the centre of each ponds
(To make the pond layer more visible on the map,
DC on symbol below the Ponds at Layers Select an appropriate shape and colour)
7. *Mistake correction, eg. Use pan/ zoom curser, to resume to digitize:
Editor Editing Windows Create Features Ponds
8. Select 20 ponds for this task Save edit Stop edit

3.2 Digitize Polygons

1. (Continue from 3.1) Editor Options General Classic snap
2. Start Editing Field Editor Snapping (Not at create features) Snapping window
Tick all 3 for Field
3. Editor Editing windows Create features Field Construction to Polygon find for
field click, DC when done Save Edit Stop Edit

3.3 Snapping and Digitizing lines

1. Continue from 3.2, ensure classic snap is turn on, and snapping window Tick all 3 for
Roads
2. Editor Editing windows Create features Road Construction to Line find for
roads click, DC when done Save Edit Stop Edit
(RC on vertices to delete if mistakes are made)
(Stop at intersection, number of points at the curve)

3.4 Editing Shapefiles (Correction)

3.4.1: Points
1. Add Shapefile ( Lab3_image, boat_docks, houses, Islands In river) Display scale: 1:1500
2. Editor Start Edit Select Caret (^) on the Edit Toolbar
LC wrong point, hold and drag to correct location;
LC RC Point to Delete feature
Clear Selected Feature Save Edit Stop edit
3. Editor Start Edit select the shapefile in create features (To add point)

3.4.2: Line
1. Editor Start Edit Split tool (/ with red dot) Select the location where you want to
break the line Select the line then delete (Remove excess lines)
2. Editor Start Edit Select the shapefile in create feature draw missing line Select
Caret Hold Shift, select the lines Editor Merge OK

3.4.3: Polygon
1. Editor Start Edit Select the shapefile in create feature Caret Select polygon
Cut polygon tool (line yellow rectangle)
Delete polygon ;
Edit Vertices to adjust vertices ;
Delete vertices if too many vertices or add vertices if too less
Save edit Stop Edit

Week 8 Task 2: Image Georeferencing

1. Add a control layer with coordinate system (Big_Mar_Roads)
Add unregistered image(Scand_p2)
2. Zoom to control(Big_Mar_Roads) Georeferencing Layer (Unregistered Image, Scand_p2)
Georeferencing Fit to display
3. Add control points (red green + line) Click on control layer then unregistered image
Pick at least 5 points Link table (beside add control points)
discard the largest residual to get low RMS error
4. Georeferencing Rectify Format: image, name: BigMar2000.img
