Construction of 36 Gas Pipeline from San Isidro
(Cd. Juarez) to El Encino (Chihuahua)
The construction of a 383 km long, 36-inch diameter, natural gas pipeline with
a capacity of up to 850 MMCFD for the provision of natural gas, contemplates
a pipeline commencing at an interconnection receipt point to be located on
Mexican territory near the border with the United States of America, at the
interconnection with the new line of 36 pipeline of El Paso Natural Gas and
ending at the site of the power plant(s) located at El Encino, State of Chihuahua.
Gas transport services was commenced on July 30, 2013. Pipeline is in service
and is able to serve an initial load of 95 MMCFD to the Norte II power plant.
The pipeline System have a guaranteed capacity of 850 MMCFD since the
beginning.
Client: Tharaumara
Project data: Pipe OD: 36 in API 5L X70, with wall thickness between 11.13
mm and 17.47 mm.
Natural gas.
Design conditions: - Pressure: the maximum operating pressure for the pipeline
will be 82.74 bar.
- Temperature: temperatures of GAS at the delivery point shall
be between 10 C and 50 C.
- Pipe roughness: the carbon steel pipe is new, protected
externally with FBE. Pipeline not internally coated. Pipes
delivered by Tubacero (Mexican Contractor) and Berg (US
Contractor).
- Flow: pipeline shall serve an initial flow rate of 95 MMCFD
(2.69 Millions of cubic meters per day) for the first 2 years of
operations and, a flow rate of 850 MMCFD (24.0693 Millions
of cubic meters per day) after the first 2 years.
Project Description: The project consists of the design, procurement & construction,
of a gas pipeline system:
a. 381,000 meters long and 36 of diameter.
b. 14 block valves along the path.
c. At the interconnection, receipt and delivery pig-trap, with a
control valve to be operated and controlled by the SCADA
system.
d. Border interconnection pipe and fitting.
e. 2 intermediate receipt and delivery pig-traps.
f. A measurement, regulation and control station (EMRC) at
the delivery points (El Encino) with a corresponding pig-trap
receiver.

The Tengiz Field, in western Kazakhstan, is located in the swamplands along the
northeast shores of the Caspian Sea. Discovered in 1979, the Tengiz oil field is one
of the largest discoveries in recent history. The city of Atyrau, 350 kilometres north
of Tengiz, is the main transport hub of Tengiz oil.
The Tengiz field will be entering a new phase of production with the construction of
the Second Generation Project (SGP) and the introduction of Sour Gas Injection
(SGI). This development started in 2004 and expected to require a total investment
of $3 billion (SGP $2.2 billion and SGI $800 million) by the scheduled completion
date of 2007.
6
Subsequent to the successful installation of the 40-inch Gas Expansion Export pipe-
6 line (GEEP), SICIM S.p.A. was awarded a contract for the installation of approxima-
tely 96 km of various diameter pipelines (up to 24). Mainly Oil Gathering Flowlines
and Trunklines in sour service and Fuel Gas Lines plus all related A.G.I. (Metering
Stations, Junctions and Manifolds).
These works were executed in the period from August 2006 to April 2006, when all
hydrotest activities were completed, all lines dewatered and finally commissioned
with the product.
Thanks to the excellent performances on this Project, either in terms of safety (0 LTI),
quality and progress, PFD/TCO expanded the original scope of work to include the
installation of additional pipelines and facilities, the testing and pre-commissioning
of pipelines and plants pipe works installed by others and all other activities required
to bring up to stream the oil field gathering system and the SGP Process Plant.
The contract duration was consequently extended to Summer 2007
In carrying out this work, SICIM S.p.A developed and implemented a Project Mana-
gement System which incorporated Quality, Safety, Environmental, Employee Re-
lations and Plant Management for all projects. The key element is the use of core
procedures and core mechanisms from UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 to make our plans
