Chapter 1

I. Background of the Study

Cyber bullying is one of the types of bullying which bully or discriminate a


person through the use of social media like; phones, computer, laptop and
other communication tools. Cyber bullying can happen any time soon, 24/7 in
just a blink of your eyes. Cyber bullying victims may have receives or see
undesirable images and erroneous rumors such as threats, provocative insults or
racial or ethnic slurs, gay bashing, attempting to infect the victims computer
with a virus and flooding an e-mail inbox with messages from anonymously.
Once it is posted or distributed to a large number of audience, it will be difficult
and sometimes impossible to trace the source. As the day go by, cyber bullying
become rampant and online communication has grown rapidly and the crime
is relatively new, many jurisdictions are deliberating over cyber bullying laws.
However, the crime is covered by existing law against personal threats and
harassment.

In this manner, the frequency of cyber bullying become fester, base on


the National Center for Education Statistics and Bureau of Justice Statistics 2014
2015 indicates that, nationwide, about 21% of students ages 12 18
experienced bullying. Also the 2015 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System or
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicates that an estimated 16% of
high school students were bullied electronically in the 12 months prior to the
survey. Therefore, the risk of those students who are victims of cyber bullying are
prone to frustration, depression, stress that can lead them to various
unacceptable manner such as; using alcohol and drugs, skip school, unwilling to
attend classes because they also experience in- person bullying, receives poor
grades , have lower self esteem and likely to have more health problems.
In addition, to prevent cyber bullying to occur and avoid the feasible
effects to your child, parents should be aware of what their kids are doing
online, establish rules about technology use and understand school rules. In this
way, you can monitor and evade your child from experiencing unwanted things
and contaminated minds. Also, to make these authentically, parents must be
aware of the good and bad feedback about social media. On the other hand,
social media is any technology design to give and share information, thoughts,
ideas, career interest and other forms of expression via virtual communities and
networks.

II. Statement of the Problem

This study aims to know the number of percentage on how rampant the
cyber bullying is in the school of ..

Moreover, this study aims to know the answer of the following research
questions:

1. What are the profiles of the participants?


2. What are the school activities or program done by the educator to
contend cyber bullying to occur in their premises?

3. How involved are the parents of the students with their childrens Internet
and cell phone activities?

4. What are the effects of cyber bullying in the students performance?

III. Scope and Delimitation

This study covered 50 respondents of grade 10 students of Carlos L. Albert


High School in Quezon City whom a cyber bullying victim or a cyber bullying
bully.
This study will not cover the students not from Carlos L. Albert and not a
grade 10 student and the no. of participants should not exceed in target no. of
respondents.

IV. Significance of the study

This study is purposely written and maid to determine the percentage of


how cyber bullying is so rampant inside the school premises and how cyber
bullying alarming are and must be taken seriously.

To the Social Media Users

We all know that social media is such a big help to everyone not just for
people but also for the economic growth. As a user we should take responsibility
of using social media especially when posting on internet site that can
unintentionally hurt others. This study will help you decipher one of the bad
effects of abusing internet to harm people through technology.

To the Parents

This study will give the parents the awareness of how social media can
lead to a wrong path. Therefore, parents must be more careful in letting their
child use social media and must monitor the use of technology to evade them
from experiencing the negative effects of being cyber bullied.

To the Educators/School Administrator

As you all know that cyber bullying also takes place in bullying inside the
schools you must be responsible in keeping the safeness and protection of the
students against cyber bullying or bullying and any other dangerous scenario
inside your premises. School must implement strong rules to contend cyber
bullying and a preacher among the bullies.
To the Future Researchers

This study will give the future researcher of cyber bullying an insight of the
occurrence of cyber bullying inside the school and how cyber bullying getting
and getting more serious and issue in our economic and its prevalence in school
premises.
