Socio Economic background of

Aranamala Tribes
Introduction
The tribes are children of nature. They are still in primitive stage and far from modern
civilization. This paper seeks to understand the problems facing the tribal community in Kerala
focusing the Tribes of Aranamala, Wayanad District. Aranamala tribes faces a lot of issues like
educational backwardness ,Unemployment, Poverty, Health & Nutritious issues , exploitation of
external forces, involuntary displacement, alcohol addiction etc,

The study would be conducted in Aranamala, a remote area in Meppadi Panchayat ,


in Vythiri Taluk, Wayanad District. This Area lays in Western Ghats, and the tribes lives here
faces evacuation from their natural habitat. Here is the need arise to understand the socio
economic background of the inhibit tribes and the changes in their life.

Importance of the study


The socio-economic problems of Aranamala tribes are vast. They are the most backward group.
Poverty, unemployment, isolation from main stream , lack of health centre facilities etc, are the
problems suffered by them, But the government welfare programs are far from there. No serious
attempt have been made by the government to reduce the problems, here the need of the study
arise.

Objectives of the study


To collect and analyse the factors leading to socio-economic problems

To observe the day to day money management among the tribal people in Wayanad district.
To analyse role of some government schemes like Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment
Guarantee Scheme, Micro credit facility etc
To understand their livelihood/Employment Status
Government policy of educating the tribals and their actual educational status.
Income and Expenditure
Educational status and incidence of high dropout rates
Health related issues like malnutrition, maternal and child health problems ,Communicable
diseases
Land Alienation, Displacement and enforced migration
High consumption of alcohol and tobacco in most areas and of drugs in the Northeast region.
Research Methodology
Methodology is the systematic theoretical analysis of the method applied to the field of
study. Methodology includes the collection of primary and secondary data. Primary data
collected through the technique of interviewing the Health, Education, Local Administration,
Social Workers etc. questionnaire is another useful method to collect data from the tribes
directly.

. Secondary data needed for the study has been collected from the following sources.
1) Journals.
2) Subject-specific books.
3) Magazines.
4) Newspapers.
5) Studies undertaken by various research institutions.

Area of study
The area of study constitute in Aranamala colony, Meppadi Panchayat of Vythiri Taluk in
Wayanad, and focusing on socio-economic issues of tribes.

Sampling technique
In the present study, the sample selection would be done in two stages. Sample selection would
be made by applying Purposive sampling method along with random sampling method. At the
first stage I used to select 50 responders in Aranamala Tribal colony on in Wayanad district. In
the second stage, 100 respondents randomly from various places throughout Wayanad.
Altogether there are 150 respondents who represent the various communities of tribal people
in Wayanad District.

Questionnaire
Consulting Local body members, Social Workers, Various Government officials
Interview
Limitations of the study

Restrictions of the target society, the tribes may not respond properly to the questions
The field study is expensive and time consuming
Access to the area is difficult due to the tribes mostly used to stay in hilly area and near
or in the jungle.
Since purposive sampling is used for selecting respondents, all the limitations of
purposive sampling will be there.

Work Plan
The project is divided into three parts. In the first stage formulate hypotheses on different subject
which deals the proposed aim of my project. Prepare Questionnaire based on that and collect data.

In Second stage of project, A careful analysis would be carried out on the basis of collected data.

Last stage should be allotted to make a detailed report.
