Lesson Title Static electricity
Grade Level 5th grade Concepts(s) Obtain and combine information from
Targeted multiple sources to explain the
difference between naturally occurring
electricity (static) and human-
harnessed electricity.
Performance Expectation
The students will obtain and combine information from multiple sources to explain the
difference between naturally occurring (static) and human-harnessed electricily.

Georgia Performance Standards - S5P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate
information to investigate electricity.

Pre-lesson: students will hear Adams Family song (so they know what it sounds like) tie it
to flashback Thursday
*Show picture of atom diagram. Ask students what they see.
*Remind students all matter made of molecules, atoms
*The students will hear a story about Matterville and the Atoms family.
*Atoms family Power point (glue Matterville diagram and Atoms family album into journal.
*Students will sing Atoms Family song.
Phenomena:
**Rub balloon on students hair (make stand up) and ask students what is happening??
What do you think could be causing this? Do you think any part of the atom might be
moving?? (Elliott Electron).
**Run hand over static tube to make Styrofoam balls jump.

*The students will rub wool sock on two balloons, put balloons together and see what
happens, then do the same thing with nylon and two balloons. What is happening with the
atoms?
*Video clip static electricity (tech book), electrons
*tech book glossary look up positive charge and negative charge, discuss definition, show
animation on projector board.
*draw example atoms on board atom, positively charged, negatively charged and how like
repel and unlike attract. Electricity IS the flow/movement of electrons. (Styrofoam balls with
marker or blue and red pins could also work).
*Explain even solid matter has electrons that move. Students will develop a moving model
to demonstrate static electricity by dividing into groups that create a situation with
unbalanced charges (What other groups would they attract to and what groups would repel
from?) The students will have a card with their charge on it.
