Diagnostic Study

Hematology – basic screening test and one of the most frequent ordered
laboratory procedures

Indication: gives valuable diagnostic confirmation about hematologic/other

body systems, prognosis, response to treatment and recovery.

Nursing Responsibilities:
• Explain test procedure/slight discomfort may be felt when skin is
punctured
• Avoid stress if possible because it may alter test result
• Select hemogram components at regular interval
• Dehydration/over-dehydration can alter test results
• Apply manual pressure/dressing to the punctured site in removal of needle
• Monitor punctured site for oozing/hematoma formation
• Resume normal activities/diet

Component Result Reference Interpretation

Hemoglobin 140 g/l 120 – 170 The result is within reference value
Hematocrit .42 .40 - .57 The result is within reference value
White blood 8.6 10 9/L 4.6 – 10 The result is within reference value
cell
Neutrophil .733 .500 - .700 There is increase in neutrophil count
which may indicate increase infection
on patient’s body that is why the body
compensates to have more neutrophil
for phagocytation of infection
Lymphocyte .208 .200 - .400 The result is within reference value

Blood Chemistry – series of laboratory test for Blood urea nitrogen, creatinine,
sodium, potassium and other serum components.

Indication: to assess for renal function

Nursing Responsibilities:
• Explain test procedure
• Assess dietary history
• Interpret results and monitor for impaired kidney function
• Monitor any outward reactions

Cranial CT scan Brain CT; Head CT; CT scan - skull; CT scan - head; CT scan -
orbits; CT scan – sinuses - A cranial computed tomography (CT) scan is an
imaging method that uses x-rays to create cross-sectional pictures of the head,
including the skull, brain, eye sockets, and sinuses.

Indication: A cranial CT scan is recommended to help diagnose or monitor

abnormal development of the head or neck, bleeding in the brain, brain infection,
brain tumor, determine the cause of a headache, determine the cause of vision
problems, muscle weakness, numbness and tingling, hearing loss, speaking
difficulties, or swallowing problems, diagnose a new stroke, evaluate changes in
thinking or behavior and evaluate injury to the head and face.

Nursing Responsibility:
• Explain the procedure to the client
• If contrast is needed, patient may be asked not to eat or drink anything for
4-6 hours before the test.
• Ask if patient is allergic to IV contrast.
• Patient will be asked to remove jewelry and wear a hospital gown during
the study.
• Patient must be still during the exam, because movement causes blurred
images. If patient can't stay still, pillows or cushions may be placed around
head to hold it in place.
• Ask to hold your breath for short periods of time while inside the machine

Result: The procedure was not yet done and there is no official result yet due to
financial constraint.
