xcitement for this year's Inter-house Singing Competition was tangible. The House Captains had
from the beginning of term to prepare for both the Set and Choice songs. Mr Zenzo Ndlovu from
Whitestone, who is a very accomplished singer and musician, was our rst judge while Mr
Richard Fenwick was the second.

Patricians were the outright winners. They had enthusiastic leaders in Lerato Nare and Bongani
Fuzwayo who had coached the boys into having some movement, rhythm and singing in tune with a little
harmony. They also chose a brilliant song Stand by Me with a mash up including Suicidal. The
coaches used their common sense as to what would appeal to everyone, including the audience and the
judges. The 2017 Inter-house Competition results were as follows: Patricians 1, Davidians 2, Georgians
3 and Andreans 4.

Thank you to the judges, the parents that attended and to the boys who were tremendous with their
behaviour and singing. Well done and we look forward to next year's event.
Meanwhile, Mrs. T.L. Burns also thought of and with the assistance of Mr. R. Fenwick organised the Face
the Music Quiz aimed at raising funds to procure musical equipment for the Music Department. It was a
fantastic and very successful evening. The Music Department hopes this becomes a regular feature of
the CBC calendar. Music is going places with CBC, please support your children who enjoy music.
Thank you to everyone that assisted in making the event a success.

O
n Tuesday the 1st of August, the Christian
Brothers family came together and paid their last
respects to Brother D.K. Turner, a former
headmaster of the college, a pioneer of the CBC night
school and an integral part of Christian Brothers
College. The funeral service organized by Br. D.V.
Kennedy, CBC RE Department and the school
administration was held in the DI Thomson Quad with
Fr. Charles Mafurutu as the Main Celebrant. People
from all walks of life, from within and outside the country,
whose lives Brother Turner had touched in one way or
the other deed the chilly weather to pay tribute to a
man who was referred to by some as the Edmund Rice
of Bulawayo.
It was a betting farewell to Brother Turner that on the
day before he passed on, CBC received the Best
Performing Part- time and Continuing Education Centre
in Bulawayo Metropolitan Province award. The school
received the certicate from the Ministry of Education
through the Better Schools Programme (BSPZ).
The award is recognition of the late Brother Turners
tireless and seless eorts of running the night school
programme that has transformed the lives of many in
society.
Through the night school programme, Brother Turner
and his team gave the less fortunate in the society a
chance to work towards attaining their O levels. Many,
who have gone through the night school, went on to
train as teachers at colleges and in other professions.
Many have changed from being maids and assistants at
homes to professionals in various elds, thanks to
Brother Turner and his team.
The Bulawayo community has lost a true shepherd of
the sheep who cared for virtually everyone in the
society.
He will be missed.

Old Boys Take a Keen Interest in the College

T
he interaction between the college and the old boys continues to be
strengthened. A number of old boys are getting more involved in the
life and activities of the college.
Bulawayo Chronicle 1965 Whilst a number of old boys have come and given inspiring testimonies at
assembly of how CBC laid a great foundation for their now successful
careers, some have shared their success stories via email and social
media. The school will continue to report on them in the newsletter,
magazine, website and facebook page as well as providing updates on
the various projects they are involved in.
Below are a few extracts from what some of the old boys had to say:
Shivam Patel who is currently studying Aerospace Engineering at the
University of Florida and is on an internship at General Electric Aviation , a
leading manufacturer of Jet engines.
The years I spent at CBC were by far the most memorable years of my
life. CBC helped me build the strong foundation upon which I stand today.
The education I obtained as well as the discipline that was enforced
helped me to stay successful and focused through my transition to an
entirely new environment. I cannot express how thankful I am for such an
institution that have shaped me into the person I am today.
Peter Stork, an old boy from 1965 currently residing at Indiana in the
United States reminisced on how CBC always typically excelled in
academics, and other areas such as Debate in the annual Eistedfordd
during his years at the college.
Igor Maksimovic who recently graduated with a degree in Chemistry from
the College of Arts and Sciences at New York University gave an
inspirational speech to the Forms 4 up to Upper Sixth on how CBC
prepared him for his post high school studies.
2007 head boy, Anastasi Karasava , after coming to give an inspirational
speech at assembly. He went on to collect contact details for all the old
boys from his year and they are planning a reunion to be held in
December.
Nhlanhla Mtobi director of Equate Africa, a leading construction company
in South Africa has stepped up eorts to boost sports and cultural activities
at the school, rolling out a generous sponsorship for the Chess Club,
Basket Ball and Rugby.
Thanks to the old boys for the great interest they have shown on the
college. This will go a long way in development projects and maintaining
the high standards of excellence at the school.
The school has identied contacts for old boys communications as follows:
Mr Matthew Leonard and Mr T. Mhlanga while the CBC Media Club will
