The themes in The Hunger Games include power, society and class and love. The Hunger Games
conforms with the theme of power as the capitol has all of the power over all of the other districts,
the game master in the Hunger Games had all the power until he was threatened with having no
winner, Katniss and Peta then had all the power over the capitol by defying their rule. The Hunger
Games conforms with the theme of society and class by having a defined class system based upon
the district one lives in. District 12, where Katniss and Peta are from are coal miners, they are a poor
district and rely upon hunting as a means of getting food. The Hunger Games conforms with the
theme of love through the action of Katniss and Peeta that they would rather die than be apart in
the arena.
The Hunger Games follows Katniss around from her story of being a head in the crowd in District 12
to a prize of the capitol with millions of fans in awe once the games are over. Katniss was put into
the Hunger Games after volunteering for her sister, since her sister Prim- was chosen to be the
tribute of District 12. Her expertise with her bow that she learned from her father however is her
ultimate advantage in the games as she is a keen deadeye. In the end Katniss rebelled against the
capitol and in turn created a complicated situation for her and those who support her.
I would recommend this book as it is very well written and has very good descriptions. The
originality of the text and the ideas that the author has implemented are very imaginative and fit
extremely well. The authors use of showing the contrast in all of the districts as a representation of
the different levels in class is a very relatable subject and can be related to our world in real life. This
series has movie counterparts so once you have read the books you can compare them to the
movies. (Collins, 2008)
