Wealth Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services is a

global program initiated by World Bank

Promotes sustainable development thru comprehensive wealth

accounting

Focuses on the value of natural capital and integration of green

accounting in development planning

System of Environmental-Economic Accounting Experimental

Ecosystem Accounting (SEEA-EEA)

In accounting for the all the value nature provides us. By doing ecosystem
accounting, we can manage natural resources more sustainably and leave
a healthier planet for future generations.

Results of the ecosystem accounting provide us scientific evidence-

based information
how much resources we have in physical terms
monetary value of services of selected ecosystems

Coastal environment state indicators like nickel, copper, lead arsenic, iron and
total suspended solids (TSS) were found to be with concentrations
consistently below detection limits and low toxicity for marine ecosystems

If future samples show significantly higher concentrations for these pollutants,

they should be included in the upscaling of accounts to investigate source of
pollution discharge and the likely biophysical and monetary impacts on coastal
ecosystems.

Relevance of the Results to Decision Makers

1. Inform policy makers of the

status, uses ad monetary
values of ecosystems at the
time a policy is designed.

2. The accounts make

information available in an
aggregated and coherent way.

3. Alert policy makers to trends

in ecosystems and the
services they supply.

Learnings

Natural resource accounting

provided important information on
Palawans capitals by being an
indicator of improvement or
degradation.
Scaling up of PhilWAVES is sought to
further assess economic growth and
impact of economic activities to the
environment
SMOT can soon aide in realigning
mining activities towards
sustainable development
