CONTROL PROCEDURE
Date 13-09-2017

1.0 SCOPE
This Procedure describes a work plan and instructions for Control of Storage
issuance and use of Welding electrodes

2.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
2.1 The Store Incharge shall be responsible for implementation of all controls
For welding material/Consumable in accordance with the requirement of this
procedure
2.2 The Store Incharge shall ensure that the welding material control is in
accordance with the requirements of this procedure.
2.3 The welding engineer is responsible for use of electrodes according to
WPS
2.4 QA/ QC shall perform periodic audits to ensure the conformance of
applicable procedure.

4.0 General
4.1 Welding material includes Covered electrodes, Filler wires.
4.2 It is mandatory that all welding consumable to be identified by
Marking. Marking shall be performed as Manufacturer name, size and
class.

CONTROL PROCEDURE
Date 13-09-2017

4.3 Welding consumables shall be purchased in accordance with

ASMEII Part C, AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code and Clients
specifications.
4.4 Receiving inspection of welding materials shall be made as per
indent raised.
4.5 Welding material shall be stored indoors under the supervision of
the Store In-charge.

5.0 Storage of Welding Electrodes

5.1 After receiving inspection, the welding electrodes shall be stored

in the warehouse or in the welding consumables control room
Under ambient temperature.
5.2 The storage area shall be cleaned and dried with adequate
Facilities.
5.3 All unopened containers of welding materials shall be identified
By Acceptance tag and stored separately by classification and size.
5.4 When containers of low hydrogen electrodes are opened, they should

Be immediately placed in an electrode-baking oven.(Mother Oven) if

else the welding Helper will take it as a loosely tied bundle.

6.0 BAKING / REBAKING & HOLDING

6.1 All electrodes having low-hydrogen coverings conforming to AWS
A5.1 and AWS A5.5 shall be purchased in hermetically sealed
containers or shall be baked by the user in conformance with
5.3.2.4 prior to use. After opening the hermetically sealed
container, electrodes not immediately issued for use shall be
stored in ovens held at a temperature of at least 250F [120C].
Electrodes shall be rebaked no more than once. Electrodes that
have been wet shall not be used.
6.2 Approved atmospheric time period : After hermetically sealed
containers are opened or after electrodes are removed from
baking or storage ovens, the electrode exposure to the
atmosphere shall not exceed the values shown in column A, Table
5.1, Electrodes exposed to the atmosphere for periods less than
those allowed by column A,Table 5.1 may be returned to a holding
oven maintained at 250F [120C] min.; after a minimum hold
period of four hours at 250F [120C] min. the electrodes may be
reissued.
6.3 Alternative Atmospheric Exposure Time Periods Established by
Tests: The alternative exposure time values shown in column B in
Table 5.1 may be used provided testing establishes the maximum
allowable time. the testing shall be performed in conformance
with AWS A5.5 for each electrode classification and each electrode
manufacturer.Such tests shall establish that the maximum
moisture content values of AWS A5.5 are not
exceeded.Additionally, E70XX or E70XX-X (AWS A5.1 or A5.5) low-
hydrogen electrode coverings shall be limited to a maximum
moisture content not exceeding 0.4% by weight.

These electrodes shall not be used at relative humidity temperature

combinations that exceed either the relative humidity or moisture
content in the air that prevailed during the testing program.
6.4 Baking electrodes: Electrodes exposed to the atmosphere for
periods greater than those allowed in Table 5.1 shall be baked
as follows:
6.4.1 All electrodes having low-hydrogen coverings conforming
to AWS A5.1 shall be baked for at least two hours between
500F and 800F [260C and 430C].
6.4.2 All electrodes having low-hydrogen coverings conforming to
AWS A5.5 shall be baked for at least one hour at
temperatures between 700F and 800F [370C and 430C].
All electrodes shall be placed in a suitable oven at a
Temperature not exceeding one half the final baking
Temperature for a minimum of one half hour prior to
Increasing the oven temperature to the final baking
Temperature. Final baking time shall start after the oven
reaches final baking temperature.

6.4 For Stainless Steel (SS) electrodes, baking is done as per the
Manufacturer instructions.

6.5 After baking re-baking, covered electrodes shall be stored in holding

oven at a temperature specified in Table 1, unless specified in
manufacturers recommendation.

6.6 Electrical portable heating oven may be used to maintain in a dry

condition after issue from the holding oven.

6.7 All covered electrodes, which have been wet or damaged, shall be
scrapped.

7.0 HANDLING

7.1 The electrodes used in fabrication and erection shall be

Issued by electrode controller/ Store Incharge against
Electrode issuance slip, which is signed by QC Inspector,
to the welder just before use and shall be Kept in
desiccators at temperature not less than 70oC.

7.2 For CS and SS Issued electrodes quantity shall be

enough for 5 hours, and for Chrome issued electrode
quantity should be enough for 4 hours.

7.3 The electrode controller/Store Incharge shall check the

damage and put the returned welding electrodes in the
