Lesson Idea Name: Counting On
Content Area: English
Grade Level(s): GSE: Kindergarten

Content Standard Addressed: Counting and Cardinality- CCK.CC.4

https://www.georgiastandards.org/Pages/Default.aspx

In this unit, instructional time will focus on: representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers,
initially with sets of objects. Students choose, combine, and apply effective strategies for answering
quantitative questions, including quickly recognizing the cardinalities of less sets of objects, counting
and producing sets of given sizes, counting the number of objects in combined sets, or counting the
number of objects that remain in a set after some are taken away.

Technology Standard Addressed: Empowered Learner

Lesson idea implementation: As you address the standards, what will students and teachers do? How will
the project be introduced? How long will it take to complete? How will student learning be assessed? How will

the final product be used to inform/differentiate learning? How will you extend the student learning to a
higher learning level? How will you conclude the lesson? How will you provide feedback to students about
their work? MINIMUM 2 paragraph overview.

To start off the lesson plan, the students will watch the BrainPop video located above to get a general idea of
what they will be doing. The teacher will play the video and ask if anyone has questions when it is over. The
teacher will put the students into small groups, and actually give them the objects that were in the video (toy
cars). This will give the class an opportunity to apply what they just learned with real-world objects. There will
be two groups of cars one group of pink and one group of blue. The students will then be asked the total
numbers of cars. This will demonstrate the counting on process. The teacher will walk around the classroom
while asking each table for their final answer. The class will then come together to conclude this lesson as a
whole to see how many toy cars in total the entire class has by counting them out loud all together. The
teacher will initiate the conversation and help count along.

This lesson plan should take around 20-30 minutes including the video, passing out the groups of cars, and
hearing the responses of the students. The student learning could be extended to a higher level by each group
sharing their amount of cars in their group to the classroom. This could be done on the Promethean Board
while one student writes the numbers on the board (or use tally marks) as the other students are counting
out loud. The students will be given an overview by asking questions such as how many pink cars did you
have and how many blue cars did you have, and then asking what they did to get the total number of cars.
This will be a way to assess the students in a group setting and figure out where they are struggling with
counting on.
