Project Report on comparative analysis and number of automobiles
sold from March 16 to March 17 in India

Introduction:-
This report has been made to study the automobile sales of top 15 manufacturers in the Financial Year
2016-17. The manufacturers included are Maruti, Hyundai, Mahindra, Honda, Tata, Toyota, Renault,
Ford, Volkswagen, Datsun, Skoda, Chevrolet, Nissan, Fiat and HM- Mitsubishi. It will analyze the market
share of each manufacturer in terms of its sales volume and will further examine the estimated growth
of automobile which comprises of Cars, Utility Vehicle (UV), Vans, and Passenger Vehicle (PV) from Q4
FY16 TO Q1 FY17.

Objectives:-
To understand the automobile sector in India.
To study the quarterly sales volume of manufacturers (from Q4 FY16 to Q1 FY17).
To comparatively analyze each manufacturer by market share (sales volume).

Scope:-
This report looks into why Maruti holds the highest market share in terms of Sales Volume (45.91%) and
suggestions on what measures and strategies could be taken by Ford to increase its market share in the
future which currently stands at 3.04%.

Limitation:-
The sales volume of each manufacturer is available only for FY16-17 so the future
projections is based on this data and is subjected to change.

Interpretation:-

The average number of automobiles sold by each manufacturer is 217087. Maruti,


Hyundai and Mahindra had above average sales while Honda, Tata, Toyota, Renault,
Ford, Volkswagen, Datsun, Skoda, Chevrolet, Nissan, Fiat and Mitsubishi had below
average sales during the FY16-17.

During the FY16-17, Maruti had the highest sales volume (1562536) while Mitsubishi
had the lowest sales volume (646).

Ford had the 8th highest sales volume of 98995 during the FY16-17.

Interpretation:-

The combined sale made by the top 15 manufacturer during FY16-17 is 3256302.

With the sales of 1562365 automobiles, Maruti holds the highest market share (45.91%).
And Mitsubishi holds the lowest market share (0.02%) with the sales of only 646
automobiles.

Ford holds the 8th highest market share of 3.04% with the sales volume of 98995
automobiles amongst the top 15 manufacturers.

Interpretation:-

In Q1 FY17, the sales of Hyundai, Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Nissan and
Fiat decreased while the sales of Maruti, Mahindra, Honda, Tata, Ford, Datsun, Skoda
and Mitsubishi increased in comparison to Q4 FY16.
The average percentage growth in Q1 FY17 in comparison to Q4 FY16 is 14.10%.
Maruti, Hyundai, Toyota, Renault, Volkswagen, Chevrolet, Nissan and Fiat registered
below average growth and Mahindra, Honda, Tata, Ford Datsun, Skoda and Mitsubishi
saw above average growth.

While Mitsubishi had the lowest market share (0.02%) in FY16-17, it recorded the
highest growth of 167.57% by selling 62 additional automobiles in Q1 FY17.

Chevrolet registered lowest negative growth of 44.10% by selling 3894 fewer


automobiles in Q1 FY17.

Ford saw the 3rd highest growth of 25.48% by selling 5083 additional automobiles in Q1
FY17.
