Police Your daughter shot
her teacher, escaped in a
stolen car, ran a blockade,
took hostages, burned
down an orphanage and
wounded three police
officers in a shootout!

Mother: Is that any

reason to treat her like a
common criminal?
Police: Maam, your
daughter shot her teacher,
escaped in a stolen car, ran
through a blockade we set
up, took hostages, burned
down an orphanage and
wounded three police
officers in a shoot out!

Mother: Is that a reason to

treat her like a common
criminal NOW!?
BREAKING DOWN THE CARTOON/ WHAT I NOTICED FIRST
MY FIRST IMPRESSION :
The mother and daughter are acting as if they are victims, questioning what
they did wrong although it is clearly pointed out.

Shows the officer side (the rules, the law, common sense).
MY ANALYSIS:
School shootings/ Crimes that can happen at schools.

School Discipline.

The Policeman in the cartoon can be (1) Us as teachers that have to deal not
only with students who think theyve done nothing wrong when they get in
trouble, but their parents as well. Or (2) School Officers on campus that
makes sure nothing bad comes into the school that's not supposed to.
COURT CASE/ CHAPTER 8:
Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994
Goss V. Lopez
Miranda V. Arizona
Ingraham V. Wright
New Jersey V. TLO
Safford Unified School District V. Redding
Vernonia School District 47J V. Acton
Board of Education V. Earls
Wood V. Strickland
RESOURCES:
Concerns:

Violent deaths at school.

Violence and Crime at school-Principal Report.
Teacher threatened with injury-Teacher Report.
Personal safety at and away from school.
Student report of Illegal drug availability on school property.
RESOURCES:

For students to succeed, their educational environment needs to be safe.

Schools must make sure that a child's education is free of distraction, drugs,
and weapons.
Students who are victimized at school are prone to poor academic
performance, dropping out, and violent behaviors.
Thankfully, all thefts and violent crimes have declined over the past.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO FOR US AS
TEACHERS?
Less Extreme Case:

Youre always going to have that trouble maker in the class, and you're
going to have to know how to deal with the situation wisely and calmly.
Like in the cartoon, students are most likely going to act like they are the
victims.
Like in the cartoon, we as teachers are there to show/teach students what is
and what is not okay.
WHAT DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH US AS
TEACHERS?
More Extreme Case:

The first statement in the cartoon is that the daughter shot her teacher. Which
we as teachers might encounter dangerous situations such as that.
We as teachers must make sure that school is a safe environment.
We might have to deal with crime and drugs, especially if we are zoned in a
bad area.
DISCUSSIONS:
Why do you think the mom asked Is that a reason to treat her like a common
criminal NOW?!, when it is clear that the daughter must be punished?

Do you worry about safety concerns as a teacher?
