Deck Replacement of Metropolitan Avenue

and Fresh Pond Roadover the L.I.R.R.
CONTRACT NO. HBQ1112
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The bridge over the L.I.R.R. at the intersection of Metropolitan Avenue and Fresh Pond Road was
constructed in 1915 by the Long Island Rail Road. It is the result of New York State ordering the
removal of the grade crossing at this location for safety reasons, since the rail tracks were at ground
level. Over the course of the bridges 101 year lifespan, it has received numerous overlays of asphalt
and steel plates have been installed as mitigation steps to remedy the deterioration of the deck of
the bridge.
