Welcome to the March issue
As we hit the freshness of spring, and

start to shake off the last of those dreary
winter days, doesnt it suddenly feel like
everything just like every little thing
is possible again? Even the daily routine
of having a good breakfast and getting to
work without hitting transport issues
gets easier. You feel so much more
positive and energised, ready to take on
whatever it is that you need to. Its like

happens at this same time every year,

So it is with this sense of new-found
vigour that has informed the making of
this issue, which is all about starting
anew with those interiors and building projects and planning it forward.
From organising the ultimate in bedroom storage in Behind Closed
Doors on page 140 to investing in multi-generational bathrooms in Look
Ahead on page 114 to the biggest Kitchen Trends for 2017 (page 82),
theres a strong dose of inspiration in here, so be ready to springboard
yourself into action as you read. You might not be able to stop yourself.
Our homeowners in this issue are as savvy and design conscious as
ever. From Mette and Chris Lowes overhaul of their listed Wiltshire
home in An Original Mix (page 24) they installed a contemporary look
kitchen which works so well in the space to the Allen familys sleek
cabinetry with copper undertones in The Soul of the Home (page 34),
these are real life lived-in family kitchens that look great but are 100 per
cent practical too. I also love the quiet sophistication of the Richardsons
kitchen in Worth the Wait on page 46 and the new look that the Joyces
managed to infuse into their space in Relaxed Elegance (page 56).
Meanwhile designer Hayley Robson of Day True Interiors has pulled off
a stunning kitchen with concrete textures that you can see on page 66.

fter returning from a spell living in
Singapore, Mette and Chris Lowe decided
to give their home in Wiltshire a complete
overhaul. Having renovated nearly every
room in the house, it was time for one last,
but very important, project. The kitchen
was looking especially tired, and in real
need of an update, recalls Mette.
Given that their home is a listed Jacobean manor house with
the kitchen in a late Victorian extension, the project had its fair
share of challenges, involving planning permissions, plumbing,
heating, lighting and electrical work. As well as improving the
insulation, adding new underfloor heating and flooring, they also
took down an internal wall in the adjacent utility to create a larger
laundry room, removed a bulky water tank suspended from the
kitchen ceiling and added an underfloor wine cellar.
Although probably the most significant challenge was a design
one, as Mette explains: Im Danish and like Scandinavian sleek
minimalism, so we were very focussed on how to create a modern
kitchen which could fit comfortably into such an old house, she
says. The solution came in the form of bulthaup b3 furniture from
Hobsons Choice. Once we had seen the crisp look of bulthaup,
it was very difficult to look at anything else, says Mette. The
natural colours combine with clean lines to such a beautiful effect
and in a way that we felt would blend harmoniously with the
original stone windows and old timber beams of the room.
Working with Hobsons Choice design consultant Laura Warren,
Mette and Chris, have created a space designed for cooking and
entertaining. It works well when friends are expected for a casual
dinner or when the couples adult daughters come to visit, just as
it does when Mette wants to catch up on her laptop at the kitchen
table or watch the news on television. With a dining table and chairs
designed by Hans J. Wegner and a contemporary-classic pendant
light designed in 1968 by Bonderup and Thorup I am like an
ambassador for Danish design, laughs Mette the room feels
gently warm and welcoming. I spend a lot of time in this room
and it always has a very good feel, she says. ekbb

what the Allen family have suffused into their transformed
family kitchen. The finished project reflects their family
history, the houses history and an intensely personal
journey through the years in their reinvigorated home.
Peter and I didnt want a sleek space, because the rest
of the house is a cosy family mixture, so we wanted our
kitchen to similarly reflect our years here. We decided on
copper, but we felt it might be too much everywhere, so we
added wood and stone to make it more unusual. They all go
together well, functionally and aesthetically, says Rosie.
Alongside the commemorative influences of the family
(Peter, Rosie, Lucy, 23, and John, 21), the history of the
house itself is celebrated here. The pine dresser was in the
kitchen when they moved in, and was built in to the original
house, so they struggled to bring themselves to repaint
it. But we went for it, and were absolutely delighted. In
the same vein, they had a local company make the 16-
arm chandelier from antique crystal. Another throwback
highlight is the walk-in larder that was converted from an
old lean-to. Previously, we had food in cupboards all over
and now, we just have one foodie heaven, she says.
For the Allens, evolving the more historic elements
into workable solutions for a new way of living was really
important. We loved our Aga and thought wed always
have one, but positioning the range in the middle of the
new island meant we needed to go all electric. Therefore,
we researched and went for the Everhot, explains Rosie.
The ambient heat from the range also keeps the new
Karndean vinyl floor warm, removing the need for
underfloor heating. We had second thoughts about
the planned wooden floor after visiting a friends, and
discovering that her lovely, hardwearing floor was, in fact,
vinyl. It is bespoke-fitted around the impressive, handmade
cabinetry to ensure its easy to look after, as well.
All in all, the family are absolutely thrilled with the
new kitchen space. Andrew from Woodstock Furniture
did the sketches, so we didnt need an architect, and he
and Alex guided the structural engineers and made it a
reality. Its amazing, the light flows in and bounces off
the copper, bathing everything in a rosy glow. Its like

leafy suburb of Twickenham? Claire
Richardson, a research director and
her husband Marlon, a partner in an
Advisory Services firm, had found the
ideal road they wanted to live on within
walking distance of the high street. It took us over two years
to find the right property to buy but when I walked into this
house, I just thought wow. It had high ceilings and such
a sense of space, everything Id dreamed of, says Claire.
The detached 1920s five bedroom property needed
renovating but when the family first moved in they were in
no rush to make any decisions. They needed time to settle
in with their daughters Scarlett, 11, and Violet, nine.
We wanted to create an open-plan style of living that was
contemporary but not too cold and clinical. The first thing we
decided on was to have a pitched roof on the extension with
gallery-style windows spanning across the back of the house to
frame the view of the garden and bring in light, Claire explains.
I took my time looking for the right kitchen company that
could offer us something a bit different. When I started talking
to Jane Powell, the designer at Roundhouse, about my ideas
on colour and design she was on my wavelength. I just knew
she would come up with a design that wouldnt just be a
standard kitchen layout, with blocks of units.
It was a perfectly proportioned room. I dont often get
the chance to design a kitchen with so much space and light
to work with. It meant I didnt have to compromise with
the layout and could include our largest pieces of bespoke
cabinetry like the double door pantry cupboard, Jane explains
At Roundhouse each kitchen is unique and the choice of
colour is a key part to the success of a design. We use Farrow
& Ball or Designers Guild paint but for Claires kitchen we
chose the French Grey range by Little Greene as that has
blended seamlessly with the walnut hand rails, Jane adds.
Its just a great space to hang out in whether its just the
four of us or were entertaining family and friends. Scarlett
and Violet sit around the island to do their homework and
we can catch up while Im cooking dinner. This is the place

Anthony, both company directors, when they began considering a move from their
early Victorian listed rectory in Lincolnshire, now that their children are grown up.
We decided that we would rather stay put and get this house just as we wanted it, says
Jane. Chief amongst their concerns with the house was the conservatory. It was a beautiful room
overlooking the garden, but not used enough too cold in winter, and attempting to heat it was like ripping
up pound notes because the underfloor heating was so inefficient, explains Jane. The kitchen was another
issue; the north-facing space was cramped and dominated by a large chimney breast, making it far from
ideal for their love of cooking and entertaining. Their solution? To replace the glass roof and one wall of the
conservatory with solid structures, add new super-efficient underfloor heating, and move the kitchen into the

The materials are the real heroes in this space which boasts
clean lines, multiple textures and striking lighting solutions

s itting at the back of this period property in North London youll find a space oozing with
industrial charm and stand-out materials. Designer Hayley Robson of Day True Interiors
has created a kitchen-living area that is both aesthetically stunning and highly functional for
life with a young family and a dog. Mortex worktops and an extractor hood do the same job as
polished concrete, offering a hardwearing surface with gleaming edges and an interesting texture. It
adds a completely different depth to the space and feels very solid, explains Hayley. Contrasting with
the mortex, there are black wood textured units, polished plaster walls and a charcoal floor made from
herringbone engineered wood which runs throughout the whole ground floor and out into the garden.
The colour of the floor is elegant and contemporary, says Hayley, but the pattern and texture is
quite classic. It helps to make the space sympathetic to the original architecture of the house,
creating a smooth flow through the downstairs of the house and bringing the outdoors in.
Storage is key in any kitchen, especially for a busy family who enjoy entertaining, which is why
Hayley ensured plenty of space to house kitchen essentials in both sides of the island, as well as
creating a hidden home for a wine cooler, freezer, fridge and larder in the bank of tall units at
one end of the kitchen. Keeping the splashback, extractor hood and shelves clear means theres
an opportunity to display a bit of personality with art and accessories, explains Hayley.
Personality is definitely something that isnt lacking in this sleek and sophisticated yet cosy
space, proving that you dont need a loud colour palette to make a bold design statement. ekbb

T ake one misshapen bathroom with architectural

features and a somewhat long and narrow space
and you have a challenge thats fit for an expert
bathroom designer. To paint the bigger picture,
this is a large, semi-detached listed property
which is set in beautiful mature woodlands in
Bristol. While in the process of redecorating other
rooms in the house the owners, who live here with their young
son, happily chose to work with Chris Payne, designer at Ripples,
who set out with a vision: I wanted the style to be simple and
contemporary, while also recognising the strong architectural style
of the property. In the original design brief, the bathroom was
originally considered as the main bathing space however, while
not an en suite, it was decided that it should be for the owners
son. The plan was to let it be generous, simple and capable of
adapting to suit different people as the family grows over time.
One of the stand-out architectural features in this room are the
windows, although they couldnt be altered due to the house being
listed. Chris explains: Fortunately the original leaded arts and
crafts-style windows were large and in good condition. Although
west facing, plenty of light floods in during the day and the setting
sun is captured beautifully through them. Purposefully placing
a large mirror opposite the window bounces this light around
the room and helps enhance the feeling of spaciousness.
In a smaller and more awkwardly shaped room like this,
making sure theres sufficient and capacious storage space without
compromising on style is an important factor. Here, the left hand
side wall of the room has been built out to allow supply and waste
pipes to service the basin and shower, while also allowing niches
to be recessed for shower storage and basin mirror. Theres also
plentiful practical storage beneath the basin in a suspended
drawer unit, says Chris. All-in-all, the finished design achieves a
natural flow with spa style combined with everything they need
for a great bathing experience, morning, noon or night. ekbb

of clothing whether its a sale bargain or something
youve been saving up for, the excitement of getting
it home, unwrapping it and trying it on never tires.
However, when it comes to storing said purchase, do you

managing director at John Lewis of Hungerford. You can never go
wrong with the principle of keeping it simple. A good designer will
group the storage for easy dressing in the morning, while bearing in
