Survival - is the ability of a seafarer to stay alive when life is threatened in a shipping
casualty. It is an action, ability or effort exerted by a person or group of persons in order
to continue to live in the mids of disastrous situation. It is a struggle for existence.
Life-saving appliances:
1. Lifeboat
2. Liferaft
3. Bouyant apparatus
4. Lifejacket (rigid)
5. Lifejacket (inflatable)
6. Lifebouy / Life ring
7. Lifejacket light
8. Immersion suit
9. Thermal Protective Air (TPA)
Ship must have a SOLAS Training Manual which explained in details the following:
Instruction for on-board maintenance of life-saving appliances shall include the following:
1. A check list for use when carrying out the inspection require by this
regulations.
2. Maintenance and repair instruction.
3. Schedule of periodic maintenance.
4. Diagram of lubrication points with the recommended lubricants.
5. List of replaceable parts.
6. List of source of spare parts.
7. Log of records of inspection and maintenance.

Things to remember:
Causes of Emergencies:
1. Fire / Explosion
2. Collision
3. Grounding or Stranding
4. Leakage
5. Icing
6. Man overboard
MUSTER LIST
WHO YOU ARE - Identifies all crews by name, number, rank, or a combination of
both number and rank.
WHERE YOU GO - Identifies the muster stations (assembly stations) which are the
designated places on the ship that personnel should go upon hearing the general
emergency alarm signal.
WHAT TO DO - Either specific duties are assigned, such as preparations of boats,
stairway guides etc., or crew will carry out duties as required - dependent on the nature of
emergency.
Personal Muster Card - contains information which are useful to crew members in an
emergency situation.
The following are information in the muster card:
1. Crew number, etc.
2. General Emergency Alarm signal
3. Fire alarn signal
4. Abandon ship signal
5. Muster (assembly) station
6. Emergency duties
ALARM SIGNALS
General Alarm - consist of seven (7) or more short blast followed by one (1) long blast on
the ship's whistle. (Instruction: Get ready)
Boat Alarm - at least (7) short blast followed by one (1) long blast repeated on the ship's
whistle. (Instruction: All to attend their station wearing life jacket)
Fire Alarm - continous blast of the whistle for a period of not less than 10 seconds
followed by continous ringing of the general alarm. (Instruction: All to attend their stations
bringing along their assigned fire fighting equipment)
Man Over Board Alarm - the letter "O" sounded at least four times on the ship's whistle
followed by the same signal sounded on the fire bells.(Instruction: rescue boat crew to
muster station immediately carrying the immersion suit)
ABANDONING SHIP
The order to abandon ship is never given until the master judges it necessary. The ship is
the safest survival craft, but if the ship's condition will put people's lives in great danger,
abandoning it will be the best option.

Buque debe tener un Manual de Formacin del Convenio SOLAS que explica en detalles la
siguientes:
Causas de Emergencias:
1. Fuego / Explosin
2. Colisin
3. O haya varado
4. Fuga
5. Formacin de hielo
6. Hombre al agua
MUSTER LISTA Cuadro de obligaciones debe estar ubicado en lugares en los que se puede ver
fcilmente. Muster lista le indica lo siguiente:
QUIEN ERES - Identifica todas las tripulaciones por su nombre, nmero, rango, o una
combinacin de ambos nmero y rango.
DONDE USTED VA - Identifica los puestos de reunin (estaciones de montaje), que son los
lugares designados en la nave que el personal debe ir al or la seal de alarma general de
emergencia.
QU HACER - Cualquiera de los derechos especficos son asignados, tales como
preparaciones de embarcaciones, guas de escalera, etc., o de la tripulacin llevarn a cabo
funciones como requerido - depende de la naturaleza de la emergencia.
Tarjeta Muster Personal - contiene informacin que son tiles a los miembros de la tripulacin en
una situacin de emergencia.
Los siguientes son la informacin en la tarjeta de obligaciones:
1. Nmero de la tripulacin, etc.
2. Seal de alarma general de emergencia
3. Seal ALARN Fuego
4. Abandonar seal barco
5. Muster (asamblea) estacin
6. Deberes de Emergencia
SEALES DE ALARMA
. Alarma general - consiste de siete (7) o ms corto explosin seguida de un (1) explosin de largo
en el silbato del buque (Instruccin: Preprate)
Alarma de barco - al menos (7) pitada corta seguida de un (1) explosin larga repetida en el
silbato del barco. (Instruccin: Todo para asistir a su estacin que llevaba chaleco salvavidas)
Alarma fuego - explosin continua del silbato por un perodo de no menos de 10 segundos,
seguido de repique continuo de la alarma general.(Instruccin: todos a asistir a sus puestos de
traer a lo largo de su equipo asignado la lucha contra incendios)
Alarma Hombre al Agua - la letra "O" sonaba al menos cuatro veces en el silbato del barco,
seguido de la misma seal sonado en las campanas de incendio. (Instruccin: la tripulacin del
bote de rescate para reunir estacin de llevar inmediatamente el traje de inmersin)
NAVE ABANDONO
El orden de abandonar el barco nunca se da hasta que los jueces dominarlo necesarias. La nave es
la ms segura de las embarcaciones de supervivencia, pero si la condicin del buque pondr la
vida de las personas en gran peligro, abandonando ser la mejor opcin.
