Overview:
This program will focus on the skills students need to transition from the
classroom to work, life and adulthood in the community. Our students are adults
and will be treated as such. This means that the goal of the students will be that
they need to be independent one day. Depending on the student's abilities, they
will be instructed asked to display knowledge and skills in the areas of daily living.
We focus on five domains of life in Connections:
Functional Academics Money management
Independent Living Skills Cooking, cleaning, chores
Community Navigating the city, public transit
Vocation Job Training, work sites
Recreation & Leisure Physical Education, social skills for playing games
Expectations:
We focus our program around the idea that our classroom is a professional
work environment. The students are therefore encouraged to dress, behave,
and treat each other as coworkers and their teachers as supervisors. The
students in our class are adults and will be treated as such. If there are
problems with students' behaviors, they will be given a write up of the
incident/behavior that requires the signature of a guardian and depending on
the severity of the incident the student may be asked to stay home from school
for a given period of time.

Rules for the Classroom:

1. Respect others
2. Respect property
3. Use appropriate voice level suiting the activity
4. Listen to, and follow directions given
5. No cell phone use in class
6. Proper clothing (No exposed bottoms, bellys or boobs)

Community Based Instruction Trips:

As part of our curriculum, we take students out into the community. We show
students how to use the bus system to navigate the city in order to go to our
work sites, and perform simulated grocery trips. We also perform community
service projects in the surrounding area. Students will have the opportunity to
participate in various Special Olympics activities throughout the school year.

Assignments:
We will not be providing assignments in the traditional sense, but students may
be asked to practice tasks at home like following recipes with guardians or
doing chores at home.
