and take it to a suitably qualified engineer. Incorrect performance of the pump can cause
complications resulting in patient injury or death.
18. WARNING: Correct management of battery charging is essential to make sure that the
pump can operate on batteries for the time specified. Failure to do so may lead to impaired
functioning of the pump, resulting in patient injury or death.
19. WARNING: The occlusion alarm level must be checked before starting an infusion to make
sure that it is appropriate for that infusion. Failure to do so may result in an unacceptably
slow time to occlusion alarm, resulting in patient injury or death.
20. WARNING: If an occlusion alarm occurs, immediately clamp the tubing and briefly press the
plunger clamp release lever to reduce pressure in the tubing to eliminate the possibility of
a bolus being delivered to the patient. Then inspect the fluid pathway for kinks, clogged
tubing or cannula, etc., in order to remove the occlusion prior to restarting the infusion. An
unintentional bolus of medication can result in patient injury or death.
21. WARNING: To maintain the performance of the pump, Smiths Medical recommends that only
the syringes listed in the Specifications section of this manual are used. Failure to do so may
result in an inaccurate delivery. Incorrect function or performance of the pump can cause
complications resulting in patient injury or death.
22. WARNING: The volume of fluid contained in the connecting tubing is a residual amount
and will not be infused. Allowance must be made for this extra volume of fluid when
initially filling the syringe and purging the system. Under-delivery of medication can cause
complications resulting in patient injury or death.
23. WARNING: To avoid patient embolism, make sure that the patient tubing is purged of all air
bubbles before administering any medication. The pump provides a purge facility to assist
with this process. The presence of air within the medication can result in complications
leading to patient injury or death.
24. WARNING: For safe operation of the pump, the syringe and patient tubing must be correctly
loaded according to the Syringe Loading instructions. Make sure that the syringe ear
(flange) is properly aligned in the slot, and the patient tubing is correctly placed in the
holders. Failure to do so may result in incorrect delivery, resulting in patient injury or death.
25. WARNING: To avoid syphoning of the syringe contents (free flow), make sure that you clamp
the patient tubing before loading or unloading the syringe; that the syringe is correctly
loaded into the pump; that the syringe plunger is properly engaged by the pumps plunger
clamp and that the pump is placed not more than 80 cm above the infusion site. Syphoning
can result in over-infusion leading to patient injury or death.
26. WARNING: To avoid over-infusion, do not purge the patient tubing when it is connected to
the patient. Over-infusion of medication can result in patient injury or death.
27. WARNING: To avoid the pump becoming detached from an IV pole or bed rail, always make
sure that the pump is securely fixed. Always check the security and stability of the assembly
with the pump mounted.
28. Failure to observe this warning may cause damage to the pump and harm the user or the
patient. As a result, the user or patient may suffer direct injury, or the pump may fail to
operate correctly, leading to patient injury or death.
29. WARNING: Following a significant liquid spill onto the pump, it should be wiped dry and
inspected by service personnel before being returned to service. Failure to do so may result
in compromised functioning of the pump, leading to patient or user injury or death.
30. WARNING: The supported syringes are single use. Follow local clinical guidelines and
manufacturers instructions regarding the use of syringes and administration sets. Thread
the administration set tubing through the tubing holder on the pump to prevent accidental
dislocation of the syringe or the tubing. Failure to observe this warning may lead to
compromised performance of the pump, resulting in patient injury or death.
31. WARNING: Where the integrity of the external protective conductor or the installation
arrangement is in doubt, the pump should be operated from the battery for reasons of
electrical safety. Failure to do so may result in compromised function of the product or
patient injury.
32. WARNING: When the pump is carrying out an infusion, to ensure that electrical safety is
maintained, only items of equipment that conform to IEC60950:1999 are to be connected
to the RS232 connector situated at the back of the pump, otherwise patient safety may be
compromised.
33. WARNING: To avoid the malfunction of the pump or equipment adjacent to it, the pump
should not be used adjacent to or stacked on other active medical equipment without an
1
impact assessment being completed by competent personnel within the hospital. Failure to
assess the mutual interference of the pump and adjacent or stacked equipment and act on
the outcome of the assessment may result in compromised operation of either or both the
pump and equipment leading to patient injury or death.
34. WARNING: To maintain the electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC)
performance of the pump use only the power cord supplied with the pump. Failure to do
so may compromise the safety or EMC performance of the pump and may lead to user or
patient injury or death.
35. WARNING: Do not reset the total while running a VTBI infusion, as doing so will re-start the
VTBI infusion which may result in an over-infusion. Over-infusion of medication can result in
patient injury or death.
Cautions
Cautions tell you about dangerous conditions that can occur and cause damage to the
pump if you do not obey all of the instructions in this manual.
1. CAUTION: Refer all service, repair and calibrations only to qualified technical personnel.
Unauthorised modifications to the pump must not be carried out.
2. CAUTION: When turning the pump on if screens similar to those illustrated are not
displayed, do not use the pump. Send the pump to a suitably qualified engineer or return it
to Smiths Medical in order to have the fault rectified.
3. CAUTION: When turning the pump on, if Err is displayed, and repeats when the pump is
turned off then on again, do not use the pump. Send the pump to be checked by qualified
technical personnel.
4. CAUTION: Do not use cleaning and disinfecting agents other than the approved ones
specified.
5. CAUTION: The pump must not be immersed in any liquids or exposed to strong organic
solvents. Wipe off spills immediately, and do not allow fluid or residues to remain on the
pump. Additionally, the pump is not designed to be autoclaved, steam-sterilised, EtO-
sterilised or subjected to temperatures in excess of 45C (113 F). Failure to observe this
caution may cause serious damage to the pump.
6. CAUTION: If the pump is used in close proximity to a fluid bag(s), it should where possible,
not be mounted directly underneath the fluid bag(s). This is to minimise the possible risk of
damage to the pump from fluid ingress should the bag rupture or leak during use.
7. CAUTION: During the removal and replacement of a pumps components, strict observance
to Electro Static Discharge (ESD) rules must be observed at all times, i.e. an earthing strap
must be worn. Failure to apply ESD protection may result in serious damage to the product
and possible malfunction. Ensure that any replacement printed circuit board or other ESD
sensitive items are stored in an anti-static container.

Trumpet curves and the EMC informamtion.
Chapter 2
Principle of Operation
Introduction
A syringe holding the fluid to be infused is clamped to the front of the Graseby 2000. The
clamp holding the syringe also functions as the gauge which identifies the size of syringe
being used.
Syringes of size 20 ml, 30 ml or 50 ml can be accommodated and recognised.
The plunger of the syringe is held in a clamp at the end of a push rod, which is driven 2
by a stepper motor through a lead screw and half-nut mechanism. The half nut allows
linear force to be applied to the plunger. The interaction between the clamp and the half
nut allows the disengagement of the mechanism to facilitate loading and unloading of
syringes before, during and after infusions.
The front panel of the pump has a four-character LED display which shows details for a
continuous infusion where the flow rate is programmed manually and a one-character
LED which displays the occlusion alarm level.
During an infusion the syringe indicator flashes to show that the pump is infusing.
Three indicators on the front panel show alarm conditions for: Downstream occlusion,
Near empty syringe and Syringe empty. Either the AC power symbol or the battery symbol
is lit on the front of the pump to show if the pump is using AC main power (and charging
the battery), or operating on its battery. The syringe type and size are indicated on the
front of the pump for verification before programming an infusion. While the Graseby
2000 pump is running, the BOLUS+ TOTAL keys may be used to deliver a bolus. The
volume delivered by this method is added to the Total Volume for the infusion.
The Graseby 2000 pump has many safety features: Self-test routines run each time the
pump is switched on to check it is working correctly and there is a range of audible and
visual alarms.
Occlusion pressure is monitored as a standard feature. The pump is normally run from
the AC power supply. It switches automatically to its internal rechargeable battery in the
event of a power cut or temporarily disconnected from the power.
