1. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness are the unalienable rights which appear in the opening
of the Declaration of Independence.
2. Consumerism encourages the purchase of goods and services in ever-greater amounts as a
partial solution to our desire for happiness.
3. Secularism denies that God is the source and center of all life and of our desire for true
happiness.
4. In his annual message at the beginning of Lent 2011, Pope Benedict XVI denounced
consumerism. The idolatry of goods . . . not only separates us from others but empties the
human person and leaves him [or her] unhappy.

responsibilities to God, to others and to oneself. Sins are mortal or venial.
