Unit Title: Cross curriculum Topic: Design a sustainable House to suit the climate Change

Unit overview Unit duration KLA

This is a cross curriculum topic. For the whole term 10-11 The unit will be focused on
Students will have the chance weeks. mathematics, science,
to learn and implement the geography and Humanities and
knowledge in predicting, Social sciences to incorporate
understanding and applying ethical and cultural aspects.
through KLAs. Measurements,
scientific ideas, the cultural and
ethical considerations will be
looked at while designing a
sustainable house.

What do they know about this topic?

Students prior knowledge assessed for their understanding of this topic through asking questions
(_). Letting the students to generate the questions while presenting it on the interactive white board.

Possible focus questions:

Climate change:
Is it naturally occurring? Or due to human activity?
What is the evidence?
What can we do to prevent this?
Are we doing enough?
What are the probable effects of climate change? To link to KLA: mathematics.
On Designing of a sustainable house:
What is sustainability?
What are the qualities of a sustainable house?
Are they easy to achieve?
What is happening globally? How do they build houses to combat climate change?
How do we do it in Australia?
What are the general qualities of a sustainable house that you (the students) would like to build or to
live in?
To discuss the ethical issues which will be linked to KLA: Humanity
The richer/developed countries being the major cause for the increased effects in greenhouse gas,
compared to the poorer countries. Do we have any ethical responsibilities towards their suffering
due to the climate change?
Unit learning outcome:

By the end of this unit, the students are will have the following skills and capabilities:
Identify and understand environmental issues.
Create awareness about the world we live in.
Able to present the issues affecting the climate.
Understand the need to protect the environment
Come up with their own solution to the climate change.
Group collaboration
ICT implementation and develop more research skills.
Design sustainable house with the long term solution in mind.
Develop skills related to predicting, reading graphs..

General capabilities:

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Capability

Critical and creative thinking
Literacy
Numeracy
Ethical understanding.
Personal and social capability

which clearly depicts the value and focus of the seven general capabilities that are important for
the successful learner, confident and creative individual, and active and informed citizen.
This goal is being a constant reminder to focus on and helps with teaching of the content.
