parking at first pres

Part of making our church a welcoming place for guests
is to make our campus as accessible as possible.

The good news is, the church shares ownership in a parking

garage across the street, and helps to maintain it so you can
easily find free parking every Sunday and during the week.

We leave street and on-campus parking for visitors, seniors

and those who need extra accessibility to the buildings.

If you are a church member and would like to purchase

a parking card for the church garage for $10, please stop
by the lobby desk at Edington Ministry Center during
the week.

traditional worship
History is a powerful teacher. Have you noticed how
often the Lord says in the Scriptures to remember?
Why, because it is important to know what has
happened. There is a part of our culture that would
seek to alter the past to make it more relevant to
todays language sensitivities, or simply to remove
an unpleasant part of history. The same sort of
editorializing can happen with hymns by changing
the wording to make the texts more relevant. All
too often when this occurs, the meaning, theology,
or poetic artistry is lost. You may have noticed that
we have new hymnals in the pews today. In the
past we have regularly left off the hymn numbers in
the bulletin because we have opted for the original
text rather than the updated text in our former
hymnals. Our new hymnal, The Worshiping Church,
has frequently chosen to remain with the original
wording. In addition, there are many more useful
hymns and worship resources throughout this hymnal,
for example: (#201), it includes all the verses of a
hymn (#560), Corporate prayers (#546), Responsive
Psalms (#76), and a host of other worship aides. In
this hymnal, we have a rich resource of not only many
more useful hymns, but a wealth of historical worship
material. Take some time to thumb through it. In
regards to our previous hymnal, with the disasters of
Irma and Harvey and their impact on churches, we
will have an opportunity to pass our previous hymnals
along where they can continue to be used. A word of
thanks to the committee for their help and input in
making this selection. -Dr. Dan Sharp

NOTES
HURRICANE IRMA RELIEF
For many of us, it's been a long couple of
weeks. We're grateful for the prayers and
the way we've seen our church family and
community come together before and after
Hurricane Irma. Here are three ways to get
started:

GIVE FINANCIALLY
We're collecting donations to meet needs directly in the
community for those affected by Hurricane Irma.
To contribute, put IRMA in the memo line of your check,
or give online this morning on our mobile-friendly giving
portal at fpco.org/give. Choose "One time gift" or "Quick
Give" and then "Irma Relief" in the drop down menu next
to the amount.

LOVE YOUR NEIGHBORS

We've been so encouraged by the stories of the First
Pres family giving, cleaning, welcoming, helping and
feeding people this week. Keep it up! Be Jesus Christ on
your street. Look for seniors or neighbors with special
needs who need yard cleanup or repairs. Don't wait to
be asked.

PRAY FOR FLORIDA

We grieve for the loss of life from this storm. Pray for
people who are facing the future without someone they
love.
Pray for those who are facing financial hardship
because of this storm, and for God's provision.
Pray for those who have lost their homes or
businesses, or who are coming home to flooded
houses and ruined belongings.
Pray for anyone who has to utter the word
"Insurance claim."
Praise Jesus for first responders, utility workers
(bless!), government officials who haven't slept, and
anyone with a chainsaw.
