1 COURSE SYLLABUS IN HUMANITIES

C O U R S E D E S C R I P T I O N:
The course Humanities 21 is designed to introduce students to college-level studies in Art. It focuses on
basic art theories and concepts of visual and performing art that would help them discern works
emanating from different periods in history. Further, this course encompasses and interrelates the various
disciplines of the Humanities. It encourages students to have recourse not only to the thoughts, ideals and
creations of others in different cultures and eras, but also their unique skills and talents.

Humanities 21 is not a craft course, students are given a more mature approach appropriate to their level,
its aim is to explore human values, attitudes, and ideas by examining the history and nature of human
creative expression from a variety of time periods, art forms, creators and cultural traditions.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:
1. To become familiar with the basic theories of Art and Art history
2. To understand the functions and relevance of the general concepts of visual art and performing arts
3. To recognize these concepts for proper assessment and understanding of the work
4. To give a mature inference on the value of the work
5. To examine several local and global forms of human creativity and innovation, such as pictorial art,
architecture, sculpture, performance art, language, literature, rituals and technology

COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Class attendance and participation
2. Forum assignments and discussions on topics based on the lectures given
3. Creative projects
4. An essay or a critique on particular art works
5. A written examination for the Midterms
6. An oral exam to supplement the Recitation Grade
7. The final output or a critical project

2. Explain the meaning of Humanities as a holistic range of disciplines that uses different approaches to
forms of art
3. Analyze and interpret selected works of art through a more discerning and intelligent approach based
