CNET 202 CENTENNIAL COLLEGE Windows Server Operating System

Course Description
This introductory course provides a basic understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of a Network
Operating System (NOS) and its organization. It will present different features of NOS, their
applications,functionalities and security models. Using Windows Server Operating System, students will
examine server NOS, by focusing on the Microsoft Windows Server 2012 administration. The course will
include server installation and configuration, management and monitoring of various network services, file
systems, print services. Students will also explore how to administer a Microsoft Server environment
using GUI and configure Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Features.

Course Learning Outcomes

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
1. Describe the main elements and purpose of a Network Operating System.
2. Discuss file system from a functionality perspective,essential network protocols and server roles
(DNS, Active Directory, print service, file service, etc.).
3. Install Windows NOS and manage Active Directory, Domain Naming System, and Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol.
4. Review, configure, manage and troubleshoot resource access.
5. Configure Windows Firewall with Advanced Security Console
6. Describe, create and configure virtual servers and virtual networks

The course material is imparted in a lecture-discussion-lab format. Materials and assignments will be

If students are unable to write a test they should immediately contact their professor or program Chair for
advice. In exceptional and well documented circumstances (e.g. unforeseen family problems, serious

communicate this in writing to the instructor and make mutually agreeable alternate arrangements.

Course Policies
Students must obtain a passing score (greater than 50%) on the average of the theory tests and also on
the final summative practical test in order to be successful in this course. Students who obtain a passing
grade in the theory portion of the course but who are unsuccessful in the final summative practical test
shall be offered a chance to retake the practical test as long as they obtained a minimum mark of 35% on
the first attempt of the final summative practical test. Retakes of the final practical shall be graded as

pass/fail with a score of 50% being recorded if successful. The retake test will be different than the
original test.
