Brief Overview of Course

This course provides an in-depth knowledge of some basic transform methods used for
engineering system analysis. It promotes the students understanding in the development of
mathematical models from simple to complex engineering systems.
Course Objective

To acquaint the students with the basic techniques in engineering system analysis using
mathematical models.

Use of Power points.


Solving Mathematical Engineering problems real-time using the interactive board.
Class exercises to involve students practically.

Course Outline

Module 1 Integral Transforms


Laplace and Z Transforms.
Derivation of transforms and inverses.
An application of these transforms in boundary and initial value problems.

Module 2 Fourier Series & Transform


Periodic functions, Trigonometric series.
Fourier coefficients, Functions of arbitrary period, even and odd functions.
Half-range series expansion.
Complex form of Fourier series.
Derivation of transforms and inverses
Application of transforms in boundary and initial value problems.

Module 3 - Vector Algebra


Vector field, gradient and directional derivative, divergence, and curl.
Line and surface integrals.
Stokes theorem.
Volume integrals, divergence theorem.
Orthogonal transformations, scale factors, basic vectors.
Cylindrical and spherical polar coordinate systems, gradient divergence and curl in these
systems.

Module 4 - Multiple Integrals


Iterated integrals, multiple integrals over elementary regions.
Change of variables
Jacobians
Differentiation of integrals involving a parameter
Leibnitzs rule.

Module 5 - Partial Differential Equations


Basic concepts of partial differential equations.

Classification of second-order linear partial differential equation into basic types.
The principle of superposition. Modeling of physical systems leading to partial
differential equations.
The wave, diffusion and Poissons equations. Boundary and initial-value problems.

Methods of Grading

Continuous Assessment (CA): 30%

Examination: 70%

Ground Rule

A minimum of 75% class attendance is required to take the course examination.
