ABSTRACT
An acetylation reaction is a reaction that substitution the acetyl compound into a match
substrate. Aspirin can be made by acetylation of phenol compounds (Form that salicylic
acid) using glacial acetic acid with the addition of concentrated sulfuric acid catalyst.
This practicum aims to make aspirin in laboratory scale, to understand the reaction
acetylation of aspirin manufacturing and calculate the presentage yield of aspirin. In
this experiment , salicylic acid 2.5 g reacted with 7 ml of glacial acetic acid and 4 drops
of concentrated sulfuric acid are the basic catalyst in a round bottom boilling flask and
than heated with maintain temperature 50-60 0C. After cooling the solution was added
with 40 ml of distilled water in order to form aspirin. Aspirin formed then recrystallized.
The result is a white powder aspirin. The aspirin tested by FeCl3 showed a faded purple
color, which means that aspirin not pure. Aspirin is obtained from 2.5 g salicylic acid
and 7 ml of glacial acetic acid was as much as 1.57 grams and has a percentage yield of
48.45%.
