OPTIMIZATION OF CNC PROCESS PARAMETERS USING

CARBIDE TOOL EMPLOYING TAGUCHI TECHNIQUE

ABSTRACT

Machining is one of the most prominent manufacturing processes performed in metal processing
industries. Manufacturing operations are performed in an attempt to make a particular product in
several steps as of necessary dimensions and shapes to ensure the quality of manufacturing
products for the intended applications made for. Machining is performed step-by-step in order
to reduce machining costs, thereby increasing machining efficiency. It has long been documented
that parameters during machining such as feed rate, cutting speed and depth of cut should be
selected appropriately in order to optimize the economics of machining operations.

The optimization of machining parameters is a unique task as it involves a number of aspects

such as knowledge of machining, empirical equations of tool life, cutting forces, power
consumption, material removal rate and machining surface finish. All these aspects should be
considered during machining optimization in order to develop an effective optimization
criterion. Metal processing industries have always relied on the skill and experience of shop floor
machine tool operators for optimal selection of cutting conditions and cutting tools.

The main objective of the project work is to study the performance of coated carbide inserts in
CNC machining of hardened steel under high speed turning. The influence of cutting parameters
(cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut) on cutting forces, surface finish, tool wear and tool tip
temperature will be analysed under different machining conditions. Taguchi Method will be
employed in order to reduce the number of experimental runs.
