CANDYBARSORRAFFLES?PERFORMANCETASK

Inthistask,youwillinvestigatetwodifferentfundraisingplansforthetenthgradeatEvergreenHighSchool.Youwill
createequationsandinequalitiesintwoormorevariablestorepresenttherelationshipbetweentheamountofmoney
raisedanddifferentassumptionswiththetwofundraisers.Youwillgraphtheequationsandinequalitiesandsolvethem
bothalgebraicallyandgraphically.Youwillusekeyfeaturesofgraphs,includingintersections,intercepts,andslope.You
willuseequationstopredicttheamountofmoneyeachoftheplanscouldpotentiallyraiseanddecidewhichisthebest
planforthetenthgradeclasstouse.

Thetenthgradeclassismadeupof220students.Thosestudentshaveagoalofraising$20,000intheirfundraiser,and
themaximumamounttheycanraiseis$30,000.Thetenthgradeclassisconsideringmodelingthefundraiseroneither
theraffleticketfundraisertheeleventhgradeclassdidlastyearorthecandybarfundraiserthetwelfthgradeclassdid
lastyear,sopricesandprizeswillbethesame.Detailsofbotharebelow.

EleventhGradeRaffleTicketFundraiserfromLastYear

Ofthe250studentsintheclass,217soldraffletickets.
Eachraffleticketcost$10.
Eachstudentsoldanaverageof10tickets.
AllticketsweresoldinSeptember.
ThemonthlyprizeswereawardedoncepermonthfromOctobertoMay.
Eachmonththreeprizesweregivenout:one$25prize,one$50prize,andone$100prize.

Whenconsideringaraffleticketfundraiser,thetenthgradetreasurerrealizestherearemanyvariablestoconsiderthe
costofthemonthlyprizes(c);thepricetochargeperraffleticket(p);thenumberofraffleticketseachstudentshould
beaskedtosell(r);thenumberofstudentswhowillparticipateinsellingraffletickets(s);howmanymonthsmonthly
prizeswillbeawarded(m);andthegoal,oramountofmoneythatthetenthgradehopestoraise(g).

Whiletheeleventhgradesuccessfullymetitsfundraisinggoalwitharaffle,thetenthgradeofficersareconcerned
becausetheyhavefewerstudentsintheirgradetohelpsellraffletickets.Thetenthgradeofficersplantoanalyzethe
eleventhgradersplantoseewhethertheycanreachthatgoalorwhatchangestheymustmaketothefundraisingplan
tomeettheirgoal.

c. Iftheyusethesameprizesandthesameticketpriceandassumeeachstudentwillsellthesamenumberof
ticketsastheeleventhgraders,howmanytenthgradestudentswouldhavetoparticipateinsellingraffletickets
fortheclasstoreachitsfundraisinggoal?
