Algebra 1 Quarter 1 Final Review Topics

Name: ___________________________________________ Date:_____________________________ Period:________

1. Integers: Know the rules and be able to identify if the signs are SAME or DIFFERENT
*Signs in front of the number is the sign.
*If there are not signs in front of the number, the number is positive.
*If two negatives are NEXT to each other they BOTH turn positive.
Addition and Subtraction:
Same Sign ADD and keep sign
Different Sign SUBTRACT and keep sign of larger #

Multiply and Divide:

Same Sign always Positive
Different Sign always Negative.
Students should be able to complete usual typical integer drill of 24 problems in 3 minutes.

2. Simplifying Expressions by Combining Like Terms

Combining like terms: To add or subtract coefficients of terms that have the same
EXPONENTS and VARIABLES.
Like terms have the SAME exponents and variables.
Do NOT use inverse operations, follow integer rules on coefficients and keep
variables and exponents the same.
Write final answers by ordering variables alphabetically and exponents from
greatest to least.
The order of variables in term do not matter.
3xy is the same as 4yx. so 3xy-4yx simplified is -1xy

3. Solving Equations by Combining Like Terms

Combine like terms on each side of equation first!
Distribute the number outside of the parenthesis to EVERY term inside the
parenthesis.
Only perform inverse operations when moving terms over the equal sign.
Get variable term by itself, on one side. Use inverse if moving over the equal sign.
Divide by the number next to variable to both sides to solve for variable.
Plug into original equation to check solutions.
NO solution exists when variables are canceled out AND values are not solutions.
ALL or Infinite solutions exists when variable terms are cancelled out and values are
solutions. Equations are the same on both sides.

4. Linear Concepts
Graph Coordinates on a coordinate grid. (x,y) Paying attention to positive and
negative signs in quadrants.
Determine the slope and y-intercept of a line from an equation in slope-intercept
form. Y=Mx+B. M=Slope B= y-intercept (0,B)
Determine the x and y intercept coordinates by plugging in for zeros.
Re-write equations in slope-intercept form to standard form and vice versa.
