Applications

S-8 (silica flour) is a finely-powdered sand with a particle size less than 200 mesh. S-8C (silica sand or Oklahoma
#1 sand) is a natural fine sand with a particle size from 100 to 140 mesh. Both additives have a silica content
(SiO2) of 98% or greater. The particle size and crystalline nature of the silica prevents strength retrogression in
cement exposed to temperatures greater than 230F (110C). Initial compressive strength properties also are
enhanced. Concentrations of S-8 or S-8C may vary from 20% to 50% by weight-of-cement. Both additives are
commonly dry-blended with cement.

Features

Strength Retrogression
Prevents cement strength retrogression at static bottomhole temperatures above 230F (110C).

Economical
Material cost is relatively inexpensive when compared to the economics of the entire well.

Early Strength Development

Provides higher initial compressive strength and maintains strength quality over time even at elevated
temperatures.

Kick-Off Performance
When setting whipstock plugs at elevated temperatures, densified cement slurries mixed at 17.2 ppg
(2050.2 kg/m3) with 15% to 35% S-SC will improve plug performance. Also economically feasible.

Compatibility
Compatible with all BJ Services cementing products.

Benefits

Prevents cement strength retrogression which could lead to severe well integrity problems.
Eliminates squeeze jobs to repair deteriorated cement.
Extends mechanical integrity over the life of the well.
Increases slurry yield, therefore reducing cement requirements.
Cost effective, reducing well maintenance costs during the life of the well.
