MGTS2606 Group Presentation

Assignment Guide
Presentation Assignment Description:

Your tutor will assign you to a group of between four and five people during your tutorial in
Teaching Week 7. Your assigned task is to design and present a 20 minute oral presentation
on a key issue from one of the course topics.

Group work - the ability to work together effectively in your group is an integral part of this
assignment. Therefore, you will be permitted to change groups only in exceptional
circumstances on application to your tutor. All group members are expected to contribute
equally to this assignment. Each member of the group must present for at least 20% of
allotted time.

Although the presentation will be designed and performed as a group, each group member
will be marked on their individual performance. Therefore, each group member must take
responsibility for their section of the presentation.

Topic of the presentation: The presentation may be on a key issue from any one topic
covered in a lecture for MGTS2606, however lecture content may NOT be replicated and the
issue must be explored in more depth than it was covered in the lecture.

Style of presentation: Visual aids must be used to enhance the oral communication. These
may be in the form of powerpoint slides, handouts and/or overhead transparencies. NOTE:
All groups must provide overhead transparencies which replicate their powerpoint slides.
This is to cover any AV malfunction on the day of assessment, or lack of availability of
powerpoint.

1. Starting out
In Teaching Week 7 there is a lecture on giving effective presentations. It is essential that
you attend this lecture and tutorials in Weeks 7-9 in order to prepare the presentation and
be assigned a presentation group. If you are absent from the Tutorial in Teaching Week 7,
you must provide documentation to your tutor to explain your absence (e.g., a medical
certificate) and contact them as soon as possible to request to be assigned to a presentation
group.

2. In your groups:

1. Read the task description and marking guide (see final page of this guide, also ECP).
2. Choose a lecture topic on which you would like to give your presentation, and a specific
issue within that topic
3. Divide the issue into four or five sections, one per group member
4. Discuss how to ensure the presentation has coherent structure and content across
speakers
5. Decide on a group strategy to maximise the persuasiveness, influence and energy of
your presentation
6. Decide on format for visual aids (each speaker should use the same format, e.g., slide
design and colour scheme)
7. Before the next tutorial: Do the required and recommended reading for Teaching Week
7.

In addition, to help you prepare the content of your presentation, see blackboard and the
electronic course profile for the recommended reading for each lecture topic – this should
be your starting point. However, we expect that you will find additional references
elsewhere and explore an issue from the lecture in more depth than it was originally
covered.

Visual Aids:
Images are very important. They provide engaging and concise illustrations of the oral
presentation. See the Week 7 lecture notes for websites that may be helpful in your search
for appropriate images.

3. Giving your presentation

Your tutor will assign you a time slot to do your presentation during Teaching Weeks 10-12.
Please be there to provide an audience (and moral support!) for the other groups in the
weeks you are not being assessed.
Please bring a handout of your group’s presentation slides (6 slides per page, double-
sided) and give this to your tutor on the week that your presentation is assessed.

MGTS2606 Group Presentation Checklist:

Before giving your presentation, discuss in your group how it complies with each of the
following points:

Structure
□ Each member of the group presents for at least 20% of the allotted time
□ The visual aids are used to enhance rather than replicate the oral presentation
□ The visual aids have been proof-read for typographical and grammatical errors
□ The presenters do not read from a script
□ The presentation takes 20 minutes (+ /- 10%)

Content
□ Coherent across speakers
□ Uses appropriate language
□ Contains introduction, main argument, and take home message
□ Lecture material has not been replicated

Audio-Visual
□ Design of visual aids (colour scheme, slide design, etc) is consistent across speakers
□ Overhead transparencies are provided that replicate the powerpoint slides
□ Handout of presentation slides (6 per page, double-sided) is provided.

Introduction states purpose and outline of presentation; Conclusion summarises key issue

Coherent organisation of ideas and information between speakers within group (wt=1)
No rambling, confusing, unfinished or irrelevant material or points (wt=1)
4. Content:
Clear (wt=1)
Does not replicate lecture material (wt=1)
Appropriate language, oral volume and pace (wt=1)
5. Visual aids
Less than 5 points per slide or transparency (wt=1)
Appropriate font size (wt=1)
Appropriate use of graphics and pictures (wt=1)
Used to enhance rather than replicate oral presentation (wt=1)
6. Critical Understanding and Synthesis:
Maintained interest of audience; Persuasive, powerful, extemporaneous, professional and
accurate presentation of the topic material, interpretation and synthesis of research, theory,
issues, and specific concrete examples; own analysis of material; appropriate application of
research and theory to examples (wt=12)
