Windsor, a year after Matthew Your next
The small
town had a
long road to
recovering
from flooding

Nearly one year after Hurricane
Matthew devastated the small town
of Windsor, the area has made sig-
nificant repairs but it still has a
long way to go.
After flooding from Tropical
Storm Julia, Hurricane Matthew hit
Windsor 13 days later in October
2016. The Cashie River overflowed,
which led to severe flooding that left
many homes and some businesses
beyond repair.
Its been a nightmare trying to
separate what damage was done in
each event, Windsor Mayor James
Hoggard said. You couldnt always
do it really. We pretty much weath-
ered the storm, and weve had a
number of things happen really in
the last couple months.
Eleven months later, all but two
businesses have returned, but many
residents are still left without suit-
able housing.
Sandrika Freeman, a UNC first-
year from Windsor, said she was
without power for three days when
the storm first hit although some
people lacked power for much longer.

laws directly contribute to
minors getting legally married.

On Thursday, in a public
talk held at the Ackland Art
Museum in conjunction with
the Arts Everywhere initiative,
Cadena explained how the
pair find inspiration in human
interaction, nature and scien-
tific innovation. They apply
this inspiration to solve the
problems of their clients.

the report found.
Our jaws dropped and our
stomachs clenched to see how
many minors were getting
married, how young some of
them were and what some
of the age differences were
between the parties, she said.
The Pew Research Center
also released a study that said
the national average for 15- to
17-year-olds married is 4.6 per
1,000 people in this age group.
The rate of child marriage
in North Carolina is slightly
higher at 5.4 per 1,000. West
Virginia is the highest with 7.1
per 1,000. The national aver-
age for 18- to 19-year-olds get-
ting married is much higher, at
about 18 per 1,000.
Cadena noticed a problem
that they wanted to solve.
They saw how the majority
of people were not engaging
with the museum and the
large outdoor space that was
open to the public.
People were afraid of cul-
ture, Cadena said.
A solution for this prob-
lem? The colorful installation
almost identical to that which
has been on the front steps of
the Ackland since the spring.
Esrawe and Cadena spent
about six months working
on the first iteration of Los
Trompos, which included 30
pieces, for the High Museum.
The name itself, Los
Trompos, translates to the
spinning tops, and the cre-
ators visualized the concept
as a metaphor for a toy.
Esrawe and Cadena drew
inspiration for the colors from

Smoot said using census
data, as Pew did, can mis-
represent the actual number
of married minors, since the
census asks the respondent
if they are married without
asking for any documented
proof. She said young people
could report they are married
religiously or culturally but
may not have gone through
the civil procedure of obtain-
ing a marriage license.
It may be over-inclusive
of people that didnt get mar-
ried under the civil laws of
North Carolina, she said.
But its also under-inclusive
in that its only gauging how
many 15- to 17-year-olds they
estimate were married and
not how many people were
their bright Mexican culture.
Now, they have shared their
creation with different com-
munities across the country.
They were conceptualized
to be put in public space, not
as objects of art, but as objects
producing human interac-
tion, Cadena said. In a way, it
comes alive when you use it.
This may ring true, espe-
cially for UNC students who
were present on campus
when the installation arrived.
For sophomore Hannah Levy,
Los Trompos was an appre-
ciated addition to campus life.
School is hard, classes are
hard, thats fine, but just take a
minute and be a kid, Levy said.
In addition to being part
of the Arts Everywhere ini-
tiative, Los Trompos was
brought to campus for a more
specific purpose.

polish and household
items to infertility.

Nail polish and other house-
hold objects could be causing
fertility problems, according
to a new Duke University and
Harvard University study.
Researchers at the two
universities found that flame
retardant chemicals in com-
mon products, such as nail pol-
ish and upholstered furniture,
could pose risks to womens
fertility.
The study showed increased
exposure to these chemicals
was linked to adverse results in
In Vitro Fertilization, which is
when an egg is fertilized outside
of the body.
Researchers took the archived
urine samples of 211 women
who had participated in IVF
treatments and analyzed them
for concentrations of organo-
phosphate flame-retardants,
called PFRs.

range or younger and
were divorced by the time of
the survey, or people who are
18 to 19 now, but married ini-
tially at those younger ages.
In Smoots study, data
was gathered from 38 states
that held records of mar-
riage licenses, but Smoot
said North Carolina hadnt
maintained statewide data on
issued marriage licenses.
So it wasnt like there was
any cache of this information
sitting in already coded data-
bases, she said.

The citing of Title VI refers
to Silent Sam as a threat to
the safety of people of color
on the Universitys campus,
with the letter stating the
statue violates federal anti-
discrimination laws by foster-
ing a racially hostile learning
environment.
Some students who signed
the letter felt removing Silent
Sam would show that the
University cares about the
safety of people of color.
Taking that down is a way
for them to show us that they
are listening, not just hearing
us, but that they are actually
listening to what were saying,
and how were feeling and
that our feelings are justi-
fied and real, signee Rimel
Mwamba said.

pointed to taking down Silent
Sam as a starting point for
addressing systemic racism
on UNCs campus.
Its not just Silent Sam.
When we were talking about
Silent Sam, we were also talk-
ing about the Center for Civil
Rights, Staton said.
Some students like
junior Andrew Brennen, a
member of The Daily Tar
Heels Board of Directors
who supports the letter on
Facebook felt the letter
represented a broad senti-
ment throughout the UNC
community.

ground that institutional
racism, these projects of rac-
ism that have existed at the
University and the state for
nearly 100 years should be
dismantled, should be taken
down, Brennen said. And
it definitely starts with tak-
ing down monuments to the
Confederacy.
Mwamba also had specific
thoughts for the immediate
symbolism of the statue itself,
even outside of the context of
institutionalized racism at the
University.
This isnt particularly just
about soldiers who fought,
its about soldiers who fought
for what in what, right? So
you cant decontextualize
it; I think thats the issue,
Mwamba said. You cant
take the context away and say,
These were just students who
fought for what they believed
in. Thats one thing, but you
have to also look at what was it
that they believed in, or what
was it that they fought for.

tastes. We all categorize;

Last November I started
working out every day. I

you came into this
world, and its been a little
brighter since.
Technically, youre just
a well-deployed bus ser-
vice for UNC students
and employees, but in
our hearts youre so much
more.
You are to us like the
stars were to ancient
mariners, coming out
every night (except breaks,
University holidays, when
the residence halls are
closed or other cursed
times) to help us reach our
destinations.
From pre-game to party,
from dorm room to YoPo,
from study lounge to late-
night restaurant, you get
us there safely and hap-
pily.
The truth behind that
second adverb is due in
large part to the legendary
kindness of your drivers,
but that kindness alone
cant totally account for
You are the major car-
rier from the desert of
South Campus weekend
activities to the relative
oasis of Franklin Street.
So, while not everyone
riding on one of your
buses on a Friday night is
going to exactly the same
place, almost everyone is
going toward fun.
Moreover, the bulk of
your occupants on such a
night are first-years, and
some potion is spilled
over from their cauldrons
(freshly brewed with new
college relationships and
dreams) onto you.
All this magic means
the normal muggle rules
dont apply when riding
with you, fey ferry.
When someone pukes
in the regular world, for
example, its a disgusting
inconvenience.
When someone pukes
on one of your buses, its
the makings of an instant
epic about community
solidarity and triumph
about personal space dis-
solve on a busy P2P night.
Which is sort of freeing.
But sweaty.
Perhaps the best thing
about you, P2P, is that you
constantly try to improve
yourself.
When you were born in
1992, you only had a small
fleet of vans. As a preco-
cious one-year old, howev-
er, you listened to student
government recommen-
dations and expanded to
include a fixed route.
Youve only continued
to grow and change up to
the present day, replac-
ing worn-out old buses
this year with new ones,
and adding a fixed route

as you keep changing
over the next 25 years

and began to accost the
young men with homopho-
bic slurs, vulgar language,
and physically violent stanc-
es; namely, standing over
them in an aggressive man-

They then began to yell
at me saying, Shut up and
leave. No one wants to hear
what you have to say. Youre
just a white male who cant
understand racism. Mind
you, I am a mixed race per-
son who is white-passing,

informed that inviting these
people to debate the state-
ment at the beginning of this
letter makes me racist.

two young men explicitly
stated that they just wanted
to prove that the left is vio-

all the time).
Through my own slow-
going appreciation of more
relaxed clothing, Ive learned
its alright to not wear what
you might consider your per-
sonal style every day.
And it really does not mat-
ter if people start assuming
things about you based on
the way you dress.
So to all the people in the
world who prefer the ath-
leisure look, I fully support
you.
Sometimes, I can be
counted as one among you
and Im happy to be a part of
that (catch me rolling up to
my 9 a.m. in gym shorts and
a UNC pullover).
All that matters is what
makes you feel most com-
fortable not what people
think because of what you
wear.

Grant awarded to help UNC build houses
The UNC chapter of
Habitat for Humanity
received $20,000.

UNCs Habitat for
Humanity chapter received a
$20,000 matching grant to
supplement its fundraising
efforts toward the building of
a house for a UNC health care
worker.
Chris and his 9-year-old
son, whose last name is not
mentioned for privacy rea-
sons, are looking for a stable
home to call their own. Any
money the club raises will
be matched by State Farm,
Habitat for Humanitys spon-
sor, up to $20,000 dollars
all going to building Chris
new home.

Taylor Fricano has thrived on change

In 2007, Taylor Fricano
knew shed be getting blocks
on the court. She just didnt
know in what sport.
My seventh- and eighth-
grade basketball coach (Rick
Stocker) from junior high told
me to try out for the volleyball
team, she said. I was like,
No, Im bad.
After getting cut from the
volleyball team in seventh and
eighth grade, she felt even
more sure that her talents did
not lie on the volleyball court.
Stocker still wasnt convinced.
I told him, I am a basket-
ball player, Coach, she said.
Im not a volleyball player. that.
He said, No, you need to go to
your high schools camp. You
could be really good at this.
Out of respect for her coach,
she listened. Now, it seems to
have been the right decision.
She quickly began to adjust
to the game. By her junior sea-
son at Palatine High School in
Illinois, she was fielding offers
from several universities. But
off the court, there was one
thing standing in her way.
My junior year, colleges
said, You need to pick it up,
she explained. I wasnt failing
or anything, but I was skim-
ming by with Bs, sometimes
one A, a C most of the time.
Always doing the bare mini-
mum ... At the end of my high
school career I picked it up.
The importance of balanc-
ing her studies and her sport
has stuck with her. Today,
shes an honor-roll student
and an all-conference athlete.

The North Carolina football
team (0-2) travels to Norfolk,
Va., this weekend to play Old
Dominion University. In
the two teams last matchup,
UNC scored a school-record 80
points in its win.
Ron Thulin, who has
worked with Turner Sports
and Fox Sports, will be the
play-by-play commentator
for Saturdays game. In a con-
versation with sports editor
Chapel Fowler, Thulin offered
some insight on UNCs oppo-
nent.
The Daily Tar Heel: Old Dominion
has recorded 15 sacks in just
two games. What makes its
defensive line so successful?
Ron Thulin: They really run an
eight-man rotation. So every
four plays, they change defen-
sive linemen.
Guys can go longer but
defensive coordinator Rich
Nagy really wants these guys
to be fresh. And that has really
helped. Guys like Bunmi Rotimi,
Pat Toal Jr., Miles Fox, Oshane
Ximines thats the front four.
But you look at the 15 sacks, 13
and a half are by the defensive
linemen.
Thats pretty special And
these guys are playing with a lot
of confidence.
And I remember a couple of
years ago talking to Rich and
he knew that this would be the
year that the defense would
be a lot better than people
thought they would What
makes them go is the defensive
line.
DTH: Just like UNC, Old
Dominion has used two quar-
terbacks this season. How is
on Wisconsin when Daytons
Kelly Sheffield accepted the
head coaching job there.
With Wisconsins deep ros-
ter, Fricano made the decision
to redshirt her first season.
The following year, Fricano
played seven of a possible 112
sets for the team. The lack of
playing time put her at a dif-
ficult crossroads.
I wasnt going to play,
Fricano said. My coach told
me that. We had our end of
the season meeting and he
said, If I know youre not
going to play, do you want me
to tell you? And I said yes,
because he knew how impor-
tant playing time was for me.
Fricano remembered
Sheffield telling her just
before spring break in 2014
that he didnt expect her to
make the starting lineup in
the fall.
So I was like Alright, lets asked Fricano to switch from
start looking, Fricano said.
Once she decided to reopen
her recruitment process, it
wasnt clear that she would
land in Chapel Hill.
I honestly did not think I
was going to come here, she
said. I dont feel bad saying
for block assists with 142. One
Ironically, it was Wisconsin
teammate Haleigh Nelson who
helped her find a new home.
Nelson, Fricanos best friend
on the team, lived in Cary.
So Fricano used the trip to
visit her friend and check out a
new school that she had barely
considered.
The visit proved more fruit-
ful than Fricano had expected.
Despite the lack of familiarity,
something felt natural. That
led to another tough decision
play for Notre Dame just
under two hours away from
home or move halfway across
the country.
I was not expecting to fall
in love with the school because
I wanted to stay close to home
and its 800 miles away from
home she said. But it was
really hard to say no.

Fricano was starting to adjust
to life in Chapel Hill.

This is going to be a big test
for these guys, because they are
going to see a lot of things from
the defense from North Carolina
that they havent seen in their
last two games.
DTH: After playing UNC, Virginia
Tech is next up on ODUs sched-
ule. What is the teams philoso-
phy when it comes to playing
bigger schools after moving up
to the FBS level in 2014?
RT: Well when Bobby started
building this program, his motto
was aim high. And if you ever
meet Bobby youd get a man
crush on the guy.
Hes very Pete Carroll-ish in
the fact that hes never had a
bad day. I mean, this guy is real-
ly, really up. He has never shied
away from a challenge.
Bobby knew what he was
going to do when he brought
the program back and hes
never veered from that. And
he wants to play (with) the big
boys.

battle with pancreatic cancer.
However, her new teammates
rallied around her. Purple is
pancreatic cancers official
awareness color, so her team-
mates incorporated that into
their support.
Every single person on the
team put purple in their hair,
put purple in their shoes,
Fricano said. I gave them rib-
bons, and I said, If you want
to wear it, you can.
Everyone did.
That kind of support for
someone they didnt even
know a transfer that had
just come in that was prob-
ably one of the most meaning-
ful moments, Fricano said.
In her sophomore season,
she played in 79 sets but saw
her playing time dwindle later
in the year. Before her junior
year, head coach Joe Sagula
opposite hitter to middle
hitter, a position she hadnt
played since high school.
Some athletes have trouble
making such a drastic switch,
but Fricano flourished. She
started all 33 matches in 2016
and tied a single-season record
of her best games came against
her former school, when she
tied a career high with 15 kills
and led her team to an upset
win over No. 2 Wisconsin.
Fricano is quick to deflect
the praise for her accomplish-
ments to her coaches.
They invested so much
time into me and they really
believed I could do some-
thing, she said. I am a stub-
born person. I want to do
things my way. So when (the
coaches) wanted me to do is now a star on a UNC team
something I didnt think I
could do there was a lot of tur-
moil. Finally, I was like, They
have great resumes, you know;
why am I not here listening?
Fricano was a leading figure
on a team that made it all the
way to the Sweet 16. She was
a second-team All-ACC selec-
tion. And she wasnt skim-
ming by with Bs anymore. In
2016, she made the ACCs All-
Academic team, too.

CARY The goals have
been coming by the bunches
for the North Carolina mens
soccer team this season.
Entering Wednesday,
the No. 8 Tar Heels were
averaging 2.80 goals per
contest, tied for the fifth-
highest mark in Division I.
Meanwhile, defense has been
a work in progress.
Through six games, the
Tar Heels have yet to record
a shutout, something they
did in four of their first
six matches a year ago. All
of that was illustrated on
Wednesday night, as eighth-
ranked UNC won, 3-2,
against William & Mary in
Cary at WakeMed Soccer
Park, with its offense once
again doing the heavy lifting
as the Tar Heels improved to
5-1 (1-0 ACC).
Despite UNC leading
1-0 and 2-1, a skilled and
determined William & Mary
squad drew even on two dif-
ferent occasions, with the
second equalizing goal com-
ing in 69th minute.
Four minutes later, senior
forward Alan Winn provided
the game-winning goal for
the Tar Heels. It was his sec-
ond score of the night.
Like any head coach,
UNCs Carlos Somoano
prefers lamenting what his
team could have done better
after a win, as opposed to a
loss.
