Diode Circuit Problems

Introduction to Diode Circuit Problems

The students are required to solve the following exercises by hand or in computer. The solution must
be below the exercise instructions. Then, a simulation for the circuit verifying the results must be
added below the solution. Remember that all works presented in this subject must be printed on both
sides of the sheet. (No se receptan trabajos que no estn impresos a dos lados de la hoja y la solucin
debe estar a continuacin del ejercicio y debajo de la solucin la simulacin)

Here are some diode circuit problems. In some question we are taking ideal diodes that means they
have zero cut-off voltage and zero resistance when forward biased and infinite resistance when
reverse biased. Germanium diode is having 0.2 volts (cut off voltage) drop in forward biased while
silicon diodes is having 0.7 volts drop. All diode circuit problems are solved on basis of these values.
Problems Based on Diode Circuits.

Diode Circuit Problem - 1: Find the current flowing in the diode shown in the circuit given below.
Also find the output voltage. Given the diode is ideal.

I1

Taking into account that the ideal diode does not regulate any voltage therefore its operation is like
that of a switch then:

Solution:

10001 = 30

1 = 30

= 0
Diode Circuit Problem - 2:-A resistance of 1 Kilo ohm is connected in parallel with a ideal diode,
this whole combination is connected in series with the another 1 kilo ohm resistor, this whole circuit
is connected with the 30 V supply. Calculate then: -

(1) Current drawn by the whole circuit.

(2) Current flow in the diode connected branch.
(3) Current flow in the resistance which is parallel with the diode.
(4) Output voltage i.e. voltage across the output resistance.

I1 I2

Taking into account that the ideal diode does not regulate any voltage therefore its operation is like
that of a switch and in this case the current I1 will be equal to I2 then:

Solution:

(1) Current drawn by the whole circuit.

(3) Current flow in the resistance which is
1 = 2 parellel with the diode
10001 = 30
1 = 30 = 0

(2) Current flow in the diode connected (4) Output voltage i.e. voltage across the
branch output resistance

= 30 = 0

Diode Circuit Problem - 3:- Assuming D1 and D2 are ideal diodes. Find the current flowing in the
diode D2.

Taking into account that the ideal diode does not regulate any voltage therefore its operation is like
the one of a switch and having to be connected inversely does not allow the passage of current this
is zero:

Solution:

= 0

=0

I=0A
Diode Circuit Problem - 4 :- Find the current and voltage across the resistance shown in the
figure.Take the diode as ideal.

I1

Taking into account that the ideal diode does not regulate any voltage therefore its operation is like
that of a switch then:

Solution:

10001 = 20

1 = 20

= 20
Diode Circuit Problem - 5:- Find which diode (given diodes are ideal) is conducting in a given
circuit.

Taking into account that the ideal diode does not regulate any voltage therefore its operation is like
that of a switch then:

Solution:

Because the ideal diode only conducts in direct polarity the only diode that leads is D2
Diode Circuit Problem - 6:- Find the equivalent resistance of the circuit given below.

I1

Solution:

Because the ideal diode only conducts in direct polarity the only diode that leads is D2

10.0001 = 1
1 = 100

100
= 10
Diode Circuit Problem - 7:- A germanium diode is connected in a circuit as shown in the figure.
Calculate the current flow through the diode in the circuit.

Talking into Germanium diode is having 0.2 volts (cut off voltage) drop in forward biased

Solution:

= .

1000
= 19.8
Diode Circuit Problem - 8:- The diode connected in the circuit shown below is made up of silicon.
Calculate the current and the output voltage of the circuit.

I1

Talking into Silicon diode is having 0.7 volts (cut off voltage) drop in forward biased

Solution:

= 0
47001 + 0.7 + 22001 5 = 10
69001 = 14.3
1 =2.07246mA

Vout =I*R
Vout = 0.45 V
