Introduction
The English Year 2 Textbook for Sekolah Kebangsaan has been written especially to meet the
requirements of the KBSR English Language Year 2 Curriculum Specifications prepared by
the Ministry of Education. It has been written in line with the National Philosophy of Education.
It is mainly to equip learners with basic skills and knowledge of the English Language so as to
enable them to communicate, both orally and in writing, in and out of school. The book is also
accompanied with an interactional compact disc and activity book which provide extended
situational and functional activities for pupils to practise.
The English Year 2 for Sekolah Kebangsaan comprises the Textbook and the Activity Book.
The package is written in accordance with the Document Standard (DS) of the Primary School
Curriculum for Year 1 and 2. It is specially designed to equip pupils with a strong foundation of
basic language skills that would enable them to communicate effectively in a variety of
contexts appropriate to their levels of development.

The Contents of KBSR English Year 2 Textbook and KSSR English Year 2
Textbook
1. The KBSR English Year two textbook for Sekolah Kebangsaan contains 12 units. Its
contents follow the KBSR English Language Year 2 Curriculum Specifications. Each unit
is based on specific areas of interests which centre around a theme. The units are
designed in such a way that they move from the home and school to neighbourhood. In
other word, it is taught within childrens experiences and environment.
2. Each unit begins with a concept page that is designed to stimulate pupils interest. This
page also outlines the learning outcomes for the unit. Each unit incorporates additional
knowledge information and ICT activities.
3. The activities in the textbook introduce the language skills to be taught in a meaningful
way where pupils are provided with sufficient opportunities to listen, speak, read and write
in the target language.
4. The materials and activities in the units are based on the cross-curricular subject matters,
which helps pupils to reinforce their knowledge learnt from other disciplines.
5. The KSSR Year 2 textbook for Sekolah Kebangsaan is divided into 18 units. Topics for
the units have been selected based on three broad themes; The world of Self, Family and
Friends, World of Stories and World of Knowledge. The units in the textbook have a
corresponding unit in the Activity Book.
6. Each unit covers the four modules; Listening and Speaking, Reading, Writing and
Language Arts. The modules presented in each unit are thematically linked and provide a
snapshot of situations which pupils are likely to experience in their lives. This will enable

pupils to relate to some of the situations they encounter and will make language learning
more meaningful for them.
7. In order to achieve this, a modular approach has been used to provide pupils with the
opportunity to focus on and develop their language skills in each module.

Differences in the contents between KBSR And KSSR English Year 2 Textbook
The Language Skills And The Language Contents In The KBSR And KSSR
Textbook
1. The unit in Year 2 KBSR English Textbook contains activities and tasks which give
opportunities to pupils to practise and develop the four language skills. The four
language skills are listening, speaking, reading and writing. Beside the language skills ,
the textbook also considered and emphasized on the aspects of the language

contents. The language contents are grammar, vocabulary, sound systems, moral
values and thinking skills.
2. The units in the textbook adopted an Integrated approach based on the curriculum
specifications. The skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing have to be
integrated in a natural manner. Elements from other subject areas are also integrated
into the content of the activities. The language skills (listening, speaking, reading and
writing) and the language contents ( vocabulary, sound system and grammar) are
taught in context in an integrated manner. They are taught through a variety of
activities in a cyclical manner to maximise learning.
3. The organization of language skills and language contents would provide the pupils
with opportunities to use English as a language of communication. It is hoped that the
language skills acquired would enable the pupils to use the language confidently for
various purposes in and outside the classroom.
4. The units in Year 2 KSSR English Textbook are based on four modules packages.
They are Listening And Speaking Module, Reading Module, Writing Module and
Language Arts Module.
5. The approach taken in this book stresses the need for the pupils to develop all four
language skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The pupils are aspect to be
able to interact with peers, listen attentively, express themselves orally or in writing
with confidence, read with comprehension and write with minimal grammatical errors.
In the Language Arts Module, pupils are aspect to show their appreciation and
demonstrate their understanding of texts read, sing songs, recite rhymes and poems
as well as produce creative works for enjoyment.
6. The approach taken in this textbook does not exclude integration of skills. The skills
integration is exploited strategically to enhance pupils development of specific
language skills as described in the content and learning standards in a module.
7. In KSSR Year 2 textbook, grammar is mainly taught based on developing pupils
understanding of grammar in their first language and this understanding may then be
exploited in Year 3 onwards when English grammar is learnt fully.

Text types used in teaching the reading and writing skills found in the
KBSR and KSSR English Year 2 textbook
1. There are various types of texts used in teaching the reading and writing skills in both
KBSR and KSSR English Year 2 textbook.
2. Teaching the pupils to read and write are both exciting and challenging. The use of
different types of texts is most important.
3. The reading and writing activities in the book are designed to develop the ability to read
and write words, phrases and sentences in linear and non-linear texts. To enrich pupils
reading and writing experiences, a variety of reading and writing texts or materials are
used.

Conclusion
Both KBSR and KSSR English Year 2 textbook have its own specialty. Even
though so, both aim to equip pupils with a strong foundation of basic language
skills which enable them to communicate and use the language effectively and
confidently for various purposes. It is hoped that the language skills acquired would
enable the pupils to use the language in a variety of contexts in accordance to the
pupils level of development. These KBSR and KSSR textbook packages are
based on the National Philosophy of Education which focus on developing the
potential of individuals in a holistic and integrated manner. It is hoped that these
textbook packages will evolve a new generation of dynamic, productive and
competent youths who will be responsible towards their religion, race and country.
